About MacDonald Island Park
Operated by the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, a not-for-profit company, MacDonald Island Park is Canada's largest community recreational, leisure, and social centre. Home to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, Miskanaw Golf Club, and future home of the exciting Shell Place expansion, MacDonald Island Park works under the umbrella of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Both the indoor and outdoor recreational facilities located on the Island are managed by a team of dedicated recreation professionals known as the ONE Team. 'Mac Island', as it is known locally, has evolved as the foremost venue for major events and exhibitions in the Wood Buffalo region.
Nestled amidst the natural beauty of the surrounding boreal forest, MacDonald Island Park is focused on providing residents with quality sports, cultural, and recreational opportunities. Expanding and enhancing major outdoor sports and event venues while creating affordable spaces for Fort McMurray's expanding not-for-profit service providers, the Island will continue to evolve as a location for one of Canada's premier recreation experiences. On the horizon in that evolution is Shell Place, a $127-million expansion project that includes a sports and performance stadium. The energy and enthusiasm of MacDonald Island Park and Shell Place will complement a vibrant and evolving Fort McMurray urban core.
