Syncrude Aquatic Centre Updates

Syncrude Aquatic Centre Guidelines: 

Due to COVID-19 restrictions introduced by the Government of Alberta on December 8, MacDonald Island Park is closed to the public. The MacDonald Island Park closure includes both the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and Shell Place. All amenities within these facilities will be closed, including the Syncrude Aquatic Centre and the Legacy Dodge Fitness Centre.

Syncrude Aquatic Centre Update:

As the amenities at MIP re-open under new Provincial guidelines, measures have been put into place which impact the number of guests that each space can host at one time.

While these guidelines are in place, we have decided to fast track capital projects in the Syncrude Aquatic Centre that will update the appearance of the leisure amenities and enhance the user experience for members and guests. These projects were previously scheduled for a future date and include: 

  • Renovations to the tile and lining along the lazy river
  • Complete replacement of the splash pad throughout the spray park

The anticipated completion for these projects is mid-January, at which time we look forward to re-opening more amenities and increasing booking options for guests. We will continue to provide updates on the progress of this work.

While these projects are underway, the Syncrude Aquatic Centre will continue to host aquatics lessons, pre-booked lane swims and pre-booked family swims. More information on these activities can be found below.

Amenity Status


The health and safety of guests and staff is our top priority. While things may look a little different upon reopening, we look forward to showing you the measures and tools we have put in place as it is everyone’s responsibility to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. The following protocols while using our facilities, will support all our efforts to maintain health and safety.

  • Guests who are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, who have been in close contact with a case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days, or have travelled internationally in the past 14 days must stay home and isolate
  • We have implemented a number of measures to assist our guests including directional arrows, signage, and physical distancing floor markers
  • Wash and sanitize your hands before and after using any amenity
  • Follow physical distancing – stay 2 meters a part at all times including your time in the parking lot
  • Protective barriers have been installed at designated locations
  • Wristbands are required and will be self-applied. We strongly encourage our guests to remove and disinfect them after use. For day pass users, please remove and discard prior to leaving the facility
  • Our facilities have all undergone an intensive, deep clean prior to opening
  • We have procured a hospital grade disinfectant that will be used to clean frequent, high touch surfaces throughout our work out areas
  • Additional hand sanitizer will be made available and strategically placed throughout the facility
  • Please bring your own water bottle. Water fountains are currently unavailable on the pool deck.
  • We strongly encourage you to come dressed and ready for your swim
  • There will be no swimming equipment available on deck such as flutter boards, flippers, pull buoys, aquafit belts or barbells
  • Lifejackets will be available as it is a lifesaving tool
  • Our team has adopted a “constantly clean” attitude, ensuring special attention is given to high-touch surfaces

Amenities Available

  • Competitive pool is pre booked lane swim (2-hour time limit)
    • Availability is based on programs and user groups
  • Training pool is pre booked lane swim or family cohort swim at specific time frames.
  • If you are unable to attend your pre-booked lane swim time, we request that you please contact Guest Services to cancel your booking, or cancel your booking online.  
  • Adult Whirl Pool is available for members and guests on a drop-in basis. Please check with the staff on the pool deck for availability. A maximum of four at a time in this amenity, with a thirty-minute maximum time limit per drop-in.
  • Sauna is available for members and guests on a drop-in basis. Please check with the staff on the pool deck for availability. Two cohort maximum at a time with a thirty-minute maximum time limit per drop-in.
  • Steam room is available for members and guests on a drop-in basis. Please check with the staff on the pool deck for availability.  A maximum of one cohort at a time, with a thirty-minute maximum time limit per drop-in.
  • Leisure side pool, spray park, water slides, family whirl pool, diving boards will remain closed at this time

Swimming Lessons

  • Only one parent and the child registered in swimming lessons may enter the Syncrude Aquatic Centre.  On the registration confirmation, guests will be notified of the pool deck location to meet the instructor
  • All lessons will be “no contact” swim instruction
  • All preschool programs and Swim Kids 1 to 3 are parented.  A parent or guardian must be in the water supporting the child at all times.  Guardian must be a minimum 16 years of age and comfortable in chest/shoulder depth water
  • Class sizes & ratios have been adjusted to allow for physical distancing throughout the lesson.
  • Viewing area on pool deck, behind glass partition will be open to watch swimming lessons.  No viewing on pool deck
  • Swim goggles are strongly encouraged

Member/Guest Lane Swim/Family Swim Bookings:

(as part of your membership or day pass)

  • Access to booked (drop-in) lane swim or family swim within the Syncrude Aquatic Centre are included in your membership or day pass
    • Members can pre-book their spot 7 days in advance online or by calling Guest Services. Guests (nonmembers) can pre-book up to 3 days in advance online or by calling Guest Services
    • Reservations are made in one hour increments (You're allowed one reservation per day per person per amenity)

Competitive Pool Booked Lane Swim Only

  • One lane per person. Swimmers must stay directly above the black line marking in each lane.
  • Lane booking is for lane swimming only and not leisure type swimming
  • Swim goggles are strongly encouraged
  • No snorkels are allowed
  • Family cohorts can book if double lane set up is available to pre-book

Training Pool Booked Lane Swim or Family Swim

  • Members and guests can have a total capacity of up to 6 in their cohort for family swim bookings.
  • Training pool will be divided into two.  One activity area will be accessed only by ladder and the other access activity area will be accessed by the ramp/stairs.
  • Pre-booked online or through Guest Services
  • Families are encouraged to bring their own clean water toys/inflatables as no public sharing of toys are allowed at this time
  • Swim goggles are strongly encouraged
  • No snorkels are allowed

Membership Update

August 1 Re-activation of MIP Memberships

  • Upon closing the facilities in March, all membership types including annual, continuous, monthly and punch passes were put on hold.
  • From March 14 – June 18, 2020, membership dues were not collected.
  • Starting June 19, members had the option to contact us to re-activate their membership if they wished to do so. 
  • If members chose not to re-activate, their membership remains on hold until August 1, 2020. 
  • At the time of activation, memberships will be extended for the length of time that the facility was closed.

August 1: All memberships will be re-activated
August 15: Those on a payment plan will resume their billing 

Members currently have the option to continue to keep their membership on hold until November 1, 2020.

Currently the benefits that are associated with MemberPlus+ are not available. If you choose to reactivate at this time, you will be re-activated at the regular membership rate.
