YMM ArtFest kicks off at MI Community Art Gallery with Il Ritratto opening reception on July 31

(Fort McMurray, AB, July 21, 2014) – The opening reception for the final exhibition of the summer season at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation will also serve as the first event of the 2014 YMM ArtFest, an annual celebration of visual arts in the Wood Buffalo region.

YMM ArtFest is a collaborative effort from the Wood Buffalo Artists Forum, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC), the Gallery at Frames & More and the Fort McMurray Historical Society. The four-day festival of visual arts is proudly supported by Suncor Energy and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and features several free events presenting the community with opportunities to enjoy the array of visual arts offerings in the Wood Buffalo region.

YMM ArtFest kicks off with the Venetian-themed opening reception of Il Ritratto at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation on Thursday, July 31 at 7:00 pm and will include antipasti, a cash bar and live entertainment. The Il Ritratto exhibition, which features portraiture in various mediums created by local artists, will be available for viewing until August 22.

On Friday, August 1 the artists of the RMWB’s Wood Buffalo Artists in Residency program will host an evening featuring the works of the four current artists in residency. The AIR Studio Conversations takes place in the Snye Room at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre beginning at 7:00 pm and is an opportunity to meet the artists in residency, discuss their work and enjoy a tapas-themed menu.

YMM ArtFest continues on Saturday, August 2 with Saturday at the Gallery at the Gallery at Frames & More on Centennial Drive. The event takes place from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and features gallery artist Leo Parent, who will demonstrate willow basket making with locally gathered willow. Guests are invited to enjoy sweet treats and coffee while learning the art of willow basket making.

YMM ArtFest wraps up on Sunday, August 3 with Art in the Park presented by the Fort McMurray Historical Society at the newly opened Marine Park Museum on Prairie Loop Boulevard. From Noon until 4:00 pm guests can enjoy art workshops for children, tours of the historical ships and a cupcake decorating station.

“We are delighted to be hosting the kickoff event for the 2014 YMM ArtFest,” said Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “This annual festival of the visual arts is a collaborative effort from several organizations and presents a great opportunity for community members to enjoy several free events over the four-day celebration. We hope everyone in the community will take the chance to enjoy these events as we celebrate the visual arts with the community and our partners.”
