Wood Buffalo to host 2015 Canadian Ringette Championships

MacDonald Island Park in partnership with the Fort McMurray Ringette Association is proud to announce it will host the 2015 Canadian Ringette Championships.

Ringette Canada awarded Wood Buffalo the 2015 Championships at its Annual General Meeting from June 8-10 in Calgary. Wood Buffalo was joined in the final round by Calgary, London, and Halifax.

“With the newly expanded format of our Canadian Ringette Championships, we were very fortunate to have comprehensive bids from across the country for our 2015 event,” said Jane Casson, Ringette Canada President. “It is encouraging to see so many locations wanting to host our national event and we would like to congratulate the committee in Wood Buffalo for being the successful candidate for 2015. We look forward to working with the organizers and are confident they will host a successful and memorable event for our athletes and fans.”

The event will take place in April, 2015 at five venues across the Wood Buffalo region, including MacDonald Island Park, Casman Centre and Frank Lacroix Arena in Fort McMurray and new facilities in Fort McKay and Anzac. The 2015 Championships will feature U16 and U19 divisions and the National Ringette League (19+) and will bring approximately 2000 athletes, coaches, officials, delegates and visitors from across Canada to the region, while delivering an estimated $2.3 million in economic impact.

Congratulations to MacDonald Island Park and the Fort McMurray Ringette Association on their successful bid to host the Canadian Ringette Championships in 2015,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “This successful bid is another example of our increasing profile as a premiere location to host events, showing that Wood Buffalo is the place to be. I’m particularly excited that games will be played in Fort McMurray, Anzac and Fort McKay, giving the two thousand expected visitors a great feel for how dynamic and vibrant our region is.”

The 2013 Canadian Ringette Championships will take place in Fredericton, while Regina will play host in 2014.

“2015 will be a special year for Wood Buffalo with the Canadian Ringette Championships and Western Canada Summer Games being held in our region,” said Mike Allen, MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo and Honorary Chair of the Host Committee. “On behalf of the Host Committee, I’d like to thank Ringette Canada for bringing its premier event to Wood Buffalo – I guarantee that we will deliver a world-class experience.”
