Wet weather fails to dampen spirits at record-breaking Play On! Fort McMurray
(Fort McMurray, AB, June 10, 2013) – Despite heavy rain and strong winds the third annual Hockey Night in Canada Play On! Fort McMurray presented by Mix 103.7 FM registered a record number of participating teams, with over 600 individual players taking part.
Play On! participation increased significantly this year, with close to 100 teams participating compared to 75 teams in 2012 and 62 in 2011. This year the event joined with Play On! events from across the country in attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest street tournament of any kind.
“The record participation level and persistence of the players despite the weather speaks to how important this event has become to the community,” said Sheldon Germain, Play On! Fort McMurray Co-Chair and Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor. “Play On! has established itself as one of the most popular events to kick off the summer season in the Wood Buffalo region.”
The local celebrity game on Saturday June 8 saw players battle it out on the street hockey rink, joined by well-known celebrities Bobbi-Jo Slusar, former Team Canada player and RBC Play Hockey representative, Mark Hartigan, two-time Stanley Cup winner, the Honourable Don Scott, MLA Fort McMurray-Conklin, in addition to Germain.
Partners including Mix 103.7 FM, Aluma Systems, AECON, RBC Play Hockey, Wood Buffalo Small Animal Hospital, Dogs Skate Garage, Keyano Huskies Men’s Hockey, Best Canadian Motor Inns, Culligan, and Hertz contributed to an event which culminated in an Elite Divison win by the Double Fist Pumps from Loon River, Alberta. Double Fist Pumps advance to the Redwood Cup, the national street hockey championships, in Yarmouth, NS, taking place September 26-28.
“The support of our partners is integral to the success of an event such as Play On! Fort McMurray,” said Germain. “I would like to thank them for making it possible to bring this event to the community once again, and I would like to congratulate not only the winning team but all the participants for showing tremendous spirit despite the weather.”
