The National presented by Syncrude hits the button with resounding success

(Fort McMurray, AB, March 16, 2014) – Glenn Howard was crowned the winner of the National presented by Syncrude, a Grand Slam of Curling event, on Sunday afternoon at CNRL Arena 2 at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. The final draw was played before a sold out crowd and national Sportsnet audience. This event brought five days of world class curling and a community celebration of international men’s curling to Fort McMurray.

Sunday’s Finals concluded an event that saw incredible curling action, including the Semi-Final match-ups on Saturday evening which pitted Brad Gushue against Sven Michel and Glenn Howard against Steve Laycock, leading to the Finals between Gushue and Howard.

“We are pleased to be the title sponsor for the Grand Slam of Curling, the National, which showcased our community’s ability as a host city,” said Scott Sullivan, Syncrude’s President and CEO. “This event provided a chance for people in the region to see many of the best curlers in the world play against each other at a fantastic venue. It also provided curling fans across Canada the opportunity to see Fort McMurray on a national broadcast.”

The five-day curling event was televised live across the country on Sportsnet and featured several Olympic medalists, including 2014 Winter Olympic Games Gold Medalist Brad Jacobs. Other well known names participating in the event included 2014 Winter Olympic Games Bronze Medalist Niklas Edin of Sweden, 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist Kevin Martin, 2006 Olympic Gold Medalist Brad Gushue, the National defending champion Jeff Stoughton and curling icon Glenn Howard.

The National presented by Syncrude included several community events: concert headliners The Sheepdogs presented by ROCK 97.9 FM, ‘The Patch’, and Community CurlZone, a family focused afternoon of fun designed to introduce community members to the sport through a variety of free activities with an opportunity to meet some of the curlers participating in the event.

“It has been our honour to host these elite men’s curlers in our community,” said Tyler Spitzer, National presented by Syncrude Organizing Committee Co-Chair. “We owe significant thanks to all of the amazing volunteers, all of our community partners including title partner Syncrude, the Grand Slam of Curling, Rogers Media and Sportsnet and most especially all the community members and curling fans who came together to enjoy and support this incredible event.”

This event was brought to the community through the efforts of the organizing committee, hundreds of volunteers, the Fort McMurray Oilsands Curling Club, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and event partners including title partner Syncrude Canada.
