Strong response demonstrated during second round of Northside engagement

(Fort McMurray, AB, December 17, 2013) – Close to 5,500 survey responses have been completed by community members through two rounds of community engagement for the proposed Northside Community Recreation Centre, both in person and online at buildingwithyou.ca.

The second round of community engagement on the proposed recreation centre ran from September 20 to November 30 and included seven in-person sessions and an online survey. The sessions and the survey enabled community members to engage with a presentation and proposed features based on the February engagement period while providing input and comments on amenity options that will drive any facility recommendation developed by the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC).

2,186 total responses were submitted in the second round, bringing the total number of responses through two rounds and 13 in-person sessions to 5,459. In the second round, 2,048 individuals chose to define preferred amenity options. The most popular amenity choices were:

  • Aquatics Centre, 43%
  • Lease Space (Cinema), 41%
  • Fitness Centre, 32%
  • Arena, 27%
  • Lease Space (Bowling), 26%

The full report compiled by independent firm RC Strategies, further outlines the results of the second round and can be viewed at buildingwithyou.ca.

“Thank you to all of the community engagement participants that provided input and feedback on the proposed Northside Community Recreation Centre,” said Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer for the RRC. “These in-person conversations and online survey responses provide the direction essential to guiding our recommendation. We are hearing in our dialogue with the community there is early consensus the Northside idea is supported with 96% of respondents expressing a desire to see the proposed facility be constructed at the Abrams Land location. At the same time, we stress this proposed facility remains unfunded as we are still very much in the community engagement phase with at least three community engagement periods remaining.”

The third round of community engagement for the proposed Northside Community Recreation Centre will commence in January 2014, with dates, times, and locations for community engagement sessions to be released in the coming weeks. The RRC commits to at least 6-8 in-person sessions in the third round in addition to the release of a new online survey at buildingwithyou.ca.
