Shell Place information session provides community with update
(Fort McMurray, AB, March 3, 2014) – The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) presented an information session on March 3 to update the community on new and ongoing initiatives at the Shell Place development and MacDonald Island.
The session shared recent developments including the collaborative initiative between the RRC, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Association and the softball community that will result in the addition of three new softball diamonds to the Shell Place project, and the repositioning of one planned baseball diamond at Shell Place to serve softball user groups. RMWB Council approved capital funding for these initiatives on January 17, 2014. Overall, four new softball diamonds, including one premier softball diamond, will open in 2015.
“This was the perfect time to return to the community with information about some new initiatives while also discussing the progress of Shell Place in general,” said Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “New softball diamonds have been incorporated into the Shell Place design and construction schedule, and we felt it was important to engage the public to discuss these additions.”
Also included at the information session was information on the ‘Water Reclamation and Heat Recovery Facility’ being constructed in conjunction with Shell Place. This project managed and funded by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in coordination with the RRC, will allow for significant water reuse and energy recovery opportunities at MacDonald Island.
“The innovative waste water treatment facility will see MacDonald Island and the RRC become leaders in sustainability and best environmental practices as we work towards a LEED Gold designation at Shell Place,” said Rachel Gordon, Director of Capital Projects, RRC. “This project will be a leading example of sustainable operations in water reclamation and conservation in our region.”
An announcement of a major partnership regarding Shell Place and the Not-for-Profit Shared Space located in the facility will be made on Thursday, March 6 at 11:00 AM. More information on Shell Place, including future events at the facility in 2015 such as the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell Albian Sands, can be found at shellplace.caand on Twitter @shellplace. The next media update on Shell Place construction progress will take place on Friday, April 11, 2014.
