Second annual MacDonald Island Zamboni Rodeo set for March 27
(Fort McMurray, AB, March 21, 2013) – CNRL Arena 2 will be the backdrop for the Second Annual MacDonald Island Zamboni Rodeo on Wednesday, March 27, as operators from across the region will compete for the title of ‘Best Zamboni Driver’ in Wood Buffalo.
There is more on the line than simple bragging rights, however. The first place finisher takes home the MacDonald Island Zamboni Rodeo championship trophy and two tickets and accommodations to an Edmonton Oilers regular season game. MacDonald Island Park’s Colin Fecho is reigning champion after edging competitors last year and is back to defend his title.
“It should be a great day at the Island as we welcome Zamboni drivers from across the region, including three operators from Archie Simpson Arena in Fort Chipewyan,” said Mike Bryson, Director of Facilities Management at MacDonald Island Park. “It’ll be a fun-filled day of friendly competition as this group of unsung heroes takes the spotlight on Wednesday.”
The Zamboni Rodeo runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and is centered on the timed navigation of an obstacle course. Points are deducted for infractions, as two morning heats and a championship round in the afternoon will determine the winner.
The event is open to the community and the media. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
The Zamboni operators are busy in preparation for the Zamboni Rodeo with this weekend’s Investors Group Hockey Alberta Midget AA Minor Provincials at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and the Frank Lacroix Arena. The Fort McMurray Junior Oil Barons are in Pool A along with Lethbridge, Spruce Grove and North Central, as they look to reach Sunday’s championship game at 3:00 p.m. at CNRL Arena 2.
