RRC and FMMBA announce 2016 Baseball Canada Cup to be held in Fort McMurray
The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) in partnership with the Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Association (FMMBA) is pleased to announce Baseball Canada’s premier tournament event, the Baseball Canada Cup, will be held in Fort McMurray from August 3-8, 2016.
The 2016 Baseball Canada Cup will see ten teams of under-17 baseball players visit the region to play in the baseball/softball tournament centre at Shell Place, Ross Hennigar Ball Park and Ron Morgan Ball Park. The prestigious national event serves to assist in the selection of Junior Team players for training camp and the National Team for the World AAA Championships, as well as providing an opportunity for scouts to evaluate future potential college and professional baseball draft picks. The announcement was made by Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor Melissa Blake on January 9 at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre.
“As we begin an exciting year of events in the Wood Buffalo region we are delighted to announce this event coming to the community in 2016,” said Russell Agnew, Interim Chief Operating Officer of the RRC. “This event is an opportunity for our community to enjoy elite level baseball and maybe even get a sneak peek at some future Canadian college and professional baseball players. Part of the incredible line-up of events coming to Shell Place beginning in the spring of 2015, the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup will continue the momentum we are building this year and bring another great new event to the region.”
In conjunction with the January 9 announcement of the successful bid to host the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup, the FMMBA will host their 2015 Winter Camp from January 9-11, 2015. In attendance at the camp are Reggie Rivard, former FMMBA Director of Baseball Operations and professional baseball player, Pat Cantwell, who played at Stony Brook University and with the Texas Rangers, Ron Andrews, who played at Cortland University and currently a coach with the Long Island Ducks Organization, Andrew Swagers, who coached for several years with the Toronto Mets and Okotoks Dawgs, and Craig Langille, who played for the Nova Scotia Selects and was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers. Langille is also currently employed as a Sport Events Supervisor of the RRC.
“This announcement is a great way to kick off our 2015 Winter Camp for local youth players,” said Kevin Breen, President of the FMMBA. “We are so excited to partner with the RRC to bring the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup to Fort McMurray as we continue to build and develop the sport in the Wood Buffalo region.”
Further details on the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup will be available in the coming months.
