Registration now open for new City Centre McMurray Half Marathon
(Fort McMurray, AB, June 25, 2013) – The organizing committee is excited to announce the introduction of the City Centre McMurray Half Marathon weekend. The inaugural race, which is in celebration of 100 years of policing in the Wood Buffalo region, will take place on September 15 in downtown Fort McMurray.
The City Centre McMurray Half Marathon includes a Half Marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 3 km road races and a Kids Fun Run and officially replaces MacDonald Island Park’s Mi Marathon, which took place at the Birchwood Trails. The event will culminate with a community barbeque and family-related activities at MacDonald Island Park, including a free outdoor performance from Juno Award winners Sloan presented by Rock 97.9 FM.
Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor Phil Meagher will serve as Honorary Chair of the event. Meagher was joined at Tuesday’s announcement by Deputy Mayor Sheldon Germain and Inspector Rob McCloy of the Wood Buffalo RCMP.
“We’re thrilled to introduce what we feel will be a cornerstone weekend event for years to come,” said Rick Kirschner, City Centre McMurray Half Marathon Co-Chair and Community Relations Manager with the City Centre Redevelopment Entity. “Our goal is to progress to a full marathon in 2014 with an eye on making the event a certified qualifying run in 2015 as City Centre takes shape.”
Registration is now open at citycentremcmurray.com and macdonaldisland.ca, where runners can also view the scheduled routes and start times for the various races. City Centre McMurray Half Marathon race package pickup will take place on Saturday, September 14 at Community Registration Day presented by Syncrude at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre.
As an added bonus, City Centre McMurray Half Marathon registrants through June 30 will receive front of line ticket access to four-time Juno Award winners Our Lady Peace presented by Rock 97.9 FM, which will take the stage outdoors at MacDonald Island Park on Friday, September 13 to kick off the festivities.
Registrants can purchase tickets to Our Lady Peace beginning on Thursday, July 4 at 10:00 am at macdonaldisland.ca or MacDonald Island Park Guest Services, while tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 5 at 10:00 am.
“The transition of Mi Marathon to the City Centre McMurray Half Marathon is one that exemplifies the growth of our community in a number of ways,” said Jodie Mercier, City Centre McMurray Half Marathon Co-Chair and General Manager of Sport and Recreation at MacDonald Island Park. “We thank City Centre McMurray for its partnership and the Wood Buffalo RCMP for its support of the event as we celebrate a century of policing in the community. We promise to deliver an exceptional experience for participants and their families as we book end the event with what we know will be great performances by Our Lady Peace and Sloan.”
