Regional Recreation Corporation recipient of Community Initiatives Program grant

(Fort McMurray, AB, July 18, 2014) – The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is the proud recipient of an Alberta Culture $75,000 Community Initiatives Program grant for the recent Grand Slam of Curling, the National presented by Syncrude.

The Honourable Don Scott, Associate Minister of Accountability, Transparency and Transformation and MLA Fort McMurray-Conklin and Mike Allen, MLA Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo, presented the grant cheque to Tyler Spitzer and Jodie Mercier, Grand Slam of Curling, the National presented by Syncrude Organizing Committee Co-Chairs on Friday afternoon at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre.

“It was a pleasure to accept this cheque on behalf of the organizing committee of the National presented by Syncrude,” said Mercier, also Director of Sport and Recreation of the RRC. “This special event was a tremendous success thanks to the support of our many partners and stakeholders, including Syncrude Canada, Aluma Systems, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Fort McMurray Oilsands Curling Club and Rogers Broadcasting among others, and the many community residents that attended the event to enjoy world class curling action and entertainment in March of 2014. On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the National presented by Syncrude and the RRC I would like to thank the Government of Alberta for its support of this event as we continue to work to bring excellence in sport, recreation and event experiences to the Wood Buffalo region.”

Building on the success of the National presented by Syncrude, the RRC will be hosting a new Grand Slam of Curling event in 2015. The Elite 10 will take place March 18 – March 22 at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. More details on the event will be released in the coming months.

The Community Initiatives Program (CIP) provides funds to enhance and enrich community initiatives throughout Alberta. The program is intended to reinvest revenues generated from provincial lotteries in communities, to empower local citizens, and community organizations to work together and respond to local needs.
