Regional Recreation Corporation proud recipient of $50,000 RBC Blue Water Grant

(Fort McMurray, AB, June 23, 2014) – The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to announce it is the recipient of a $50,000 RBC Blue Water Project Leadership Grant for the construction of a holding pond in conjunction with the Water Reclamation and Heat Recovery Project at MacDonald Island Park.

“RBC realizes the important role of protecting fresh water sources. We are proud to be making a difference on a local scale by supporting reclamation efforts that would otherwise depend on the Snye River. This contribution as part of our RBC Blue Water Project will help reclaimed waste water to be used for irrigation of the Miskanaw Golf Course. To date, RBC has pledged over $38 million that protect watersheds,” said Dwain Krissa, Regional Vice President, RBC.

Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC, accepted the cheque alongside Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Mayor Melissa Blake at the Grand Opening of the new RBC branch in Stoney Creek Village in Fort McMurray on Saturday, June 21.

“We are very proud to be the recipient of this Blue Water Project Leadership Grant from RBC,” said Reid. “This grant will assist us in continuing the construction of the holding pond at the Miskanaw Golf Course as we develop leadership in sustainability, one of the primary goals of the RRC.”

The innovative Water Reclamation and Heat Recovery Project being developed in collaboration with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo creates significant new opportunities to pursue sustainable operations at MacDonald Island Park. This pilot project for the RMWB Neighbourhood Energy Concept serves to demonstrate world-leading sustainable operations in the region. The project allows for significant water reuse and energy recovery opportunities as the Shell Place project at MacDonald Island heads towards designation as the first LEED Gold facility in Wood Buffalo.

The RBC Blue Water Project focuses on supporting initiatives that help protect and preserve water in towns, cities and urbanized areas with populations of more than 10,000 people.
