Play On! Fort McMurray to participate in Guinness World Record attempt
(Fort McMurray, AB, May 1, 2012) – Fort McMurray street hockey enthusiasts of all ages will contribute to an Official Guinness World Record attempt when Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! presented by Mix 103.7 FM returns to MacDonald Island Park on June 8-9.
National organizers have their eyes set on shattering the official world record for the largest street tournament of any kind, which was set in 2010 and currently sits at 205 teams and 2,096 participants. With Fort McMurray as one of 21 participating Play On! cities, the community can play a role in pushing the event over the top.
“Play On! is a quintessential community event here in Wood Buffalo,” said Sheldon Germain, Play On! Fort McMurray Co-Chair and Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor. “The event has grown exponentially over the past two years and I’m excited to work with the ‘Mi Team’ at MacDonald Island Park and all of our partners to deliver an exceptional Play On! experience in June.”
75 teams participated in Play On! Fort McMurray in 2012 at C.A. Knight Way, as registration grew 20% from 2011. Registration for 2013 is ongoing at playon.ca/events/mcmurray and numbers are already trending ahead of last year according to Darcie Downey, Play On! Fort McMurray Co-Chair and Realtor with Coldwell Banker.
“This is a young, vibrant, family-oriented community and Play On! truly exemplifies that,” said Downey. “We’re seeing strong interest both in terms of registration and partnership opportunities putting us ahead of where we were last year at this point. We’d love to break the 100-team barrier this year as we play our part in setting a world record.”
Players can register now across 14 different divisions at playon.ca/events/mcmurray. Corporate and community partners looking for remaining sponsorship opportunities can contact Nate Bedford, Events and Programs Manager at MacDonald Island Park at email@example.com.
