Overwhelming community response to “Christmas for Fort McMurray”

Due to overwhelming community response to the “Christmas for Fort McMurray” initiative, the distribution centre located at Shell Place is now closed as all donated items have been distributed to Fort McMurray families in need.

“Christmas for Fort McMurray” was created by Helga and Terry Lempriere of High River, Alberta. Inspired by their own experience after the floods in High River and the subsequent donation they received of Christmas décor, the Lemprieres organized an effort to collect donations of new Christmas décor to be delivered and distributed in Fort McMurray.

On Wednesday, November 2, the distribution centre welcomed 400 families in need in our region as they selected Christmas décor from the items donated across the province and country. Remarkably, one box of donated items came to Fort McMurray from Athens, Greece, to support the initiative.

Said Helga Lempriere: “Terry and I would like to thank the people of Fort McMurray for such a warm welcome!  From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were among family. The tears, the hugs and expressions of gratefulness left us feeling overwhelmed and humbled.  We feel honored to have been able to bring hope and expectation to so many fearful, hurting hearts through the donation of Christmas ornaments, decor and trees.  We did not act alone.  The kindness and generosity of Albertans has once again shone through.  The many businesses, churches and organizations, locally and throughout Canada, that gave above and beyond is valued and appreciated so much.  May the spirit of hope and generosity continue to thrive among us all. We believe Fort McMurray will recover and come back, better and stronger, together. And finally, "A merry Christmas to us all; God bless us everyone!"
