Miskanaw Golf Club wraps up highly successful Junior SNAG program
Miskanaw Golf Club at MacDonald Island Park is gearing up for golf season as the popular Junior SNAG (Starting New At Golf) program comes to a close.
More than 700 students from grades 3-8 took part in the Junior SNAG program this winter at schools across the Wood Buffalo region. Professionals from Miskanaw Golf Club provided complementary instruction and equipment to students, who learned golf basics in the comfort of gym class.
Unique to the renowned Junior SNAG program is modified equipment designed specifically for children, including colourful and lightweight golf clubs and special Velcro golf holes.
“Our students loved the SNAG program,” said Lou Ann Demers-Noble, Principal at Good Shepherd School. “For most of our students it was their first exposure to golf, and many of our students are now excited for the snow to melt so they can golf at Miskanaw. We look forward to having the SNAG program back again next year, and we thank Miskanaw Golf Club for including us in this partnership!”
An added benefit to the Junior SNAG program is the character and etiquette lessons students receive as part of the hands-on golf training that prepares them for the sport.
“I am very pleased with the success of the Junior SNAG program at MacDonald Island Park’s Miskanaw Golf Club. The program builds confidence, promotes friendship, and encourages physical fitness among our youth,” said Melissa Blake, Mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. “As our region continues to grow at a tremendous rate, we look to programs like SNAG to provide fun and unique recreational opportunities for our young people. I look forward to this wonderful program contributing to our community’s quality of life for many years to come.”
Miskanaw Golf Club plans on offering a fall version of Junior SNAG following the successful spring session.
“The response in the community has been tremendous. We’re fortunate to live in a region where students, teachers, and administrators are so receptive to SNAG,” said Rob MacGregor, Director of Golf & Grounds at MacDonald Island Park. “We’ve gone from 15 to 56 Junior members at Miskanaw Golf Club over the last year and that speaks to the level of engagement from the community.”
