Mi Dance Academy wraps up successful opening year
(Fort McMurray, AB, June 27, 2013) – The first official year at the Mi Dance Academy has finished as a tremendous success, with well over 400 students participating in classes that ranged from hip hop and tap to jazz and ballet.
Beginning at its Grand Opening in September 2012 and wrapping up with Encore, its season-ending dance recital in May, 2013, the Mi Dance Academy instructors and students have been dancing their way through the months, with several high points along the way.
“The Mi Dance Academy has experienced astonishing growth during its first year,” said Jodie Mercier, General Manager of Sport and Recreation at MacDonald Island Park. “The academy has seen an enrollment increase of nearly 150%, with 458 students participating in classes. Of those 458 students 181 were under the age of six, indicating the high degree of interest in our dance programs for younger children.”
Mi Dance Academy hosted several public workshops, including classes in hip hop, tap, lyrical, jazz/funk, and bunny hop. Attendance and enthusiasm for all workshops was high, with great enthusiasm exhibited by all who participated.
In February two instructors and several hip hop students travelled to “Street Groove” in Edmonton, a hip hop dance convention where they explored the art and technique of hip hop, while students also had the chance to participate in dance examinations, in particular the Society of Russian Ballet ballet exams and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing modern dance exams.
This interest in dance has led the Mi Dance Academy to initiate some new programs for next year, including Salsa Babies and Salsa Tots, which have never before been offered in Fort McMurray.
“The success of the program has been tremendously encouraging,” said Mercier. “We are so proud of all of our dancers that worked so hard throughout the year, and we are proud to say the Mi Dance Academy is continuing to grow exponentially. As we move into the 2013-2014 dance season and looking even further ahead it is clear the Mi Dance Academy will continue to grow alongside our community, and we are proud to foster that growth and development. I would like to thank our wonderful instructors, Miss Dara-Jane, Miss Katie, and Miss Kelli for all their hard work and dedication over the past year.”
