MacDonald Island Park breaks ground on expansion project
(Fort McMurray, AB, September 15, 2012) – With Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Mayor Blake at the helm of golden-bucketed 40-foot SMS Equipment PC-360 excavator, MacDonald Island Park officially broke ground on its $127-million expansion project on Saturday afternoon.
Blake was joined by Fort McMurray-Conklin MLA and the Associate Minister for Accountability, Transparency and Transformation the Honourable Don Scott, Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Mike Allen, members of RMWB Council and the MacDonald Island Park Board of Directors, among other dignitaries.
Community members representing not-for-profit and sports organizations and industry were in attendance, as were representatives from MacDonald Island Park’s community and corporate partners in addition to community members at-large. This is most important according to Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer at MacDonald Island Park.
“What was exciting about the community engagement process that laid the foundation for today’s groundbreaking was the number of individuals that drove the ‘Think Big’ dream simply because they wanted to see a better community for their families,” said Reid. “That said, now it’s time to deliver on our promise. We intend to be as transparent and accountable to the community as we take this next step.”
With construction underway at the outdoor expansion site and the Total Fitness Centre, MacDonald Island Park would like to announce an initial series of media engagement sessions or ‘Think Big’ lunches scheduled for the Red Fox Boardroom in 2013. The dates are as follows:
· January 18, April 19, July 26 and October 25
· All media engagement sessions will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will include a walkthrough of the expansion site following the session
“We’re committed to walking side by side with the community because ultimately this is their project,” said Nick Sanders, Chair of the MacDonald Island Park Board of Directors. “It’s important we engage with media and the community on an ongoing basis and inform the community as the project progresses.”
