MacDonald Island Park and Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy standing strong after devastating wildfire impacts communities in the region

After a devastating wildfire in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to share news that the facilities it operates at MacDonald Island Park in Fort McMurray, including the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, Miskanaw Golf Club and Shell Place, and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy, a CNOOC Limited Company, located in Anzac, are standing strong.

“First, on behalf of the RRC Board of Directors and the entire team of RRC employees, we want to extend our best wishes to all the community members of the region who experienced this wildfire and the mandatory evacuation,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “This is a very difficult time for our entire region, and we want all community members to know that we stand beside them during this period. We also want to extend deep and sincere thanks to the fire fighters from across the country, particularly those from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, who fought so valiantly to ensure buildings such as ours remain standing to assist our region in the rebuilding process. We are very pleased to announce that the facilities at MacDonald Island Park and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy remain intact and are standing strong.”

Both the Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MacDonald Island Park in Fort McMurray and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy in Anzac served as evacuation centres during the mandatory evacuation of communities in the RMWB and as emergency operation centres for the fire fighters and first responders battling the fire that threatened the region.

“It will take some time for us to assess any damages the facilities may have sustained during the wildfire,” said Antoniak. “At this time however damage appears to be minimal, and we are genuinely grateful that when the mandatory evacuation order is lifted we will be able to work towards serving our region once again. The team at the RRC is committed to the task of meeting whatever challenges may lie ahead, and providing any assistance our community and residents require. We truly look forward to returning to Wood Buffalo when it is safe to do so and reopening our facilities, welcoming back the thousands of community members who have come to see us as the heart of the community.”

Further information, including anticipated reopening dates for the facilities in Fort McMurray and Anzac, will be shared in the coming weeks.

Said Antoniak: “We hope all community members stay safe during this time, and are assured that when they return to Fort McMurray and Anzac they will find MacDonald Island Park and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy waiting to greet them as they arrive home!”
