Ice surfaces to open ahead of schedule after necessary upgrades to refrigeration unit
(Fort McMurray, AB, September 27, 2013) – MacDonald Island Park is pleased to announce that several ice surfaces will open for usage ahead of the scheduled completion date of upgrades to its refrigeration unit.
CNRL Arena 2, which closed to users on August 24, is scheduled to re-open on September 30, over two weeks ahead of schedule. The successful completion of work on the refrigeration unit now allows CNRL Arena 1 to open on Friday, October 4, and the Leisure Ice on Thursday, October 10. The Mini Ice and Fort McMurray Oilsands Curling Club will open for usage on October 15 as previously scheduled.
“The overhaul and installation of a new world class ice chiller was necessary, especially given the busy season ahead for hockey, curling, skating and ringette,” said Mike Bryson, Director of Facilities Management at MacDonald Island Park. “We thank the community for its support, particularly the many user groups, and we are looking forward to a great season ahead with new boards and glass, as well as an upgraded refrigeration unit. We are very pleased to be able to open the ice surfaces ahead of schedule and welcome back all those who use the ice surfaces for sport and recreation.”
A leak in the ice chiller was uncovered during summer maintenance, and the only option was to completely replace the existing ice chiller in order to minimize impact to the community and sports organizations ahead of the 2013-2014 winter season. Working in consultation with the Fort McMurray Minor Hockey Association, Noralta Skating Club, the Fort McMurray Ringette Association and Fort McMurray Oilsands Curling Club, MacDonald Island Park connected with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to re-allocate scheduled ice bookings, while coordinating the 2013-2014 winter season to begin post-shutdown. The temporary schedule that is in effect will be continuing until October 14, 2013. All user groups will remain in their location as noted in the temporary schedule until that date. User groups looking to purchase additional ice should please contact Glenna Green at MacDonald Island Park @ 780-791-0070 ext. 5022.
