Fort McMurray to host first regular season CFL game in Wood Buffalo history - June 27
Building on the strong community support for the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell Albian Sands, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to announce the first regular season Canadian Football League game in Wood Buffalo history will take place on June 27, 2015 at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place.
This history-making event will feature the Toronto Argonauts as the home team taking on the Edmonton Eskimos in an exciting east-west match-up anticipated to generate great excitement in the region and beyond.
Commented Argonauts Sr. Vice President, Business Operations, David Bedford, “We are happy to do our part in expanding the interest and reach of the CFL into northern Alberta, one of the key economic areas of our country, by participating in the Northern Kickoff. SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place is perfectly suited to host our regular season home game, the sightlines are terrific and the surrounding landscape is spectacular. We invite our fans from Toronto, as well as those now living in the Wood Buffalo region to don their Double Blue and join us in Fort McMurray for this historic event.”
The tremendous community response to the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell, a CFL season-opening exhibition game on June 13, 2015 at SMS Equipment Stadium, fostered further discussions with the CFL in regard to hosting a regular season game.
“We are delighted to welcome the Argonauts to Fort McMurray as the home team for this game,” said Michael Cachia, Chair of the Board of Directors of the RRC. “Thanks to the strong support of the community and our many partners and the vision and guidance of Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor and Council as we developed Shell Place, we are able to present exciting new opportunities in sport, recreation and event experiences to the Wood Buffalo region, including this continuation of the Northern Kickoff experience in Fort McMurray.”
SMS Equipment Stadium, the performance stadium at Shell Place, will play host to both the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell CFL exhibition game on June 13 and the regular season match-up on June 27.
“SMS Equipment, as partner in the SMS Equipment Stadium, is pleased to see new events of this caliber brought to the Wood Buffalo region,” said Dirk Maritz, General Manager, Fort McMurray Operations of SMS Equipment. “This east versus west game is yet another opportunity for residents of our region to enjoy professional sports in a stadium designed specifically to host world-class events.”
Shell Place, the $127 million community-led expansion project at MacDonald Island, is scheduled to open to the community in spring, 2015. Shell Place includes several amenities in addition to the SMS Equipment Stadium, such as the CNOOC Nexen Stage, social profit shared space, softball/baseball tournament centre, badminton centre, field house, hospitality banquet and conference space, and more.
