Fort McMurray Monarchs come home to Shell Place on June 18th
The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is delighted to welcome the Fort McMurray Monarchs Football Club home to SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place on June 18th.
The Monarchs, anchor football tenant at SMS Equipment Stadium, were temporarily displaced due to the Fort McMurray wildfire and subsequent community-wide mandatory evacuation. During their displacement the Monarchs opened their season at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove, AB, posting an impressive 66-0 win over the Calgary Wolfpack on May 28 and a loss, but 43-42 close finish, on June 4 against the Central Alberta Buccaneers.
“We are so grateful to Fuhr Sports Park, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Eskimos for helping us to open our season in Spruce Grove,” said Jesse Maddox, President of the Monarchs. “We are also thankful to our fans for their ongoing support. The entire team is so excited to head back to play the remainder of the season on our home field at Shell Place.”
On June 18th at 7:00 pm the Monarchs will tackle the Grande Prairie Drillers. Admission to the game is free for Wood Buffalo residents thanks to the Government of Alberta and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Free tickets for the game are available beginning June 13 at the Shell Place Box Office at MacDonald Island Park. Game attendees must present a ticket for admission.
“We are so pleased to welcome the Fort McMurray Monarchs home to Shell Place at MacDonald Island Park,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “When we announced the Monarchs as the anchor football tenant in April we could not have anticipated the turn this season would take for them and for our community, but we are thrilled that on June 18th every resident of the region will have the opportunity to welcome them home and cheer them on as we celebrate football and community spirit together.”
