Free community events to take place on June 29, 2016
The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to announce local residents will have the opportunity to enjoy two free events on Wednesday, June 29th, 2016.
On the morning of June 29th Smitty’s Canada will partner with the RRC to present a free pancake breakfast for the community. The morning breakfast will include a special live musical guest performance.
“Thanks to the assistance of our great partners at Smitty’s Canada, we will begin the community event with a pancake breakfast. The breakfast will also feature a very special musical guest: Canadian country star Brett Kissel.,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC.
Originally from Flat Lake, Alberta, Kissel is the recipient of a JUNO Breakthrough Artist award, multiple CCMA awards, and holder of five Top Ten Singles from his debut album “Started With a Song”. His single “Airwaves”, from his sophomore album “Pick me Up” went #1 at Country radio in Canada. Kissel performed most recently at MacDonald Island Park in Fort McMurray in March, 2015.
The Community Pancake Breakfast presented by Smitty’s Canada will take place from 9:00am-11:00am at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place. Doors for the breakfast will open at 8:30am.
On the evening of the 29th, the Fire Aid for Fort McMurray Concert, taking place at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, will be available for viewing at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place in Fort McMurray thanks to a partnership with Shaw Communications Inc., who will be providing a live feed of the concert. The doors at Shell Place will open at 4:00pm on June 29th in anticipation of the 5:00pm start of the Fire Aid for Fort McMurray Concert. Admission to the event in Fort McMurray is free of charge. The event at Shell Place will feature the live feed from the Fire Aid concert in Edmonton as well as live performances from local artists.
“Shell Place is the perfect location for people to view the musical acts performing in Edmonton at Fire Aid while enjoying being home in our community after many weeks away due to the devastating wildfire. The temporary installation of a state-of-the-art Titan Display Screen and the live feed courtesy of Shaw will allow thousands of local residents to enjoy the concert from the comfort of our own home stadium,” said Antoniak. “Not only are we pleased to be able to share a live feed from the Fire Aid concert, but we are also very excited to announce Canadian country superstar George Canyon will act as our local MC for the event at Shell Place.”
A Nova Scotia native, Canyon was recently inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame and has been widely decorated with a number of accolades including multiple CCMA and ECMA Awards in addition to his multiple JUNO Award wins. With 400,000 albums sold worldwide, multiple major acting roles on television, and the 2015 launch of his radio show “Down East Country with George Canyon”, the singer-songwriter has cemented his status as a bona fide multi-faceted artist and performer. Canyon has performed multiple times in Fort McMurray and has developed a strong connection to the community, including through his performances at MacDonald Island Park.
Said Antoniak: “We are so grateful to Brett, George, Smitty’s Canada and Shaw for their support and assistance with this community-focused event. Through these partnerships we have the opportunity to welcome the residents of our region home as we reflect on the events since May 3rd and look towards the future. We hope the residents of our region will join us on June 29th in Fort McMurray to enjoy this experience as we strengthen our community bonds and begin the journey of recovery and rebuilding together."
