First pieces of steel erected at new SMS Stadium at Shell Place
(Fort McMurray, AB, September 13, 2013) – Continuing to deliver the new Shell Place on schedule and on budget, the steel construction is under way at SMS Stadium, future home to community recreation and special events, such as the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell CFL game between the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Construction of SMS Stadium is now well under way, with significant progress expected to occur in the next few months. Despite poor weather during the early months of this spring and summer construction at Shell Place has been seeing steady progress and the project continues to meet timelines and budget, which is subject to the Guaranteed Maximum Price.
“Seeing the first piece of steel erected in the Field House at Shell Place in late April was a milestone, and now we can begin to see SMS Stadium take shape as well,” said Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer of MacDonald Island Park and Chief Executive Officer at the Regional Recreation Corporation. “The erection of steel for the amenities helps the community begin to visualize Shell Place, and with that visualization comes a realization of the potential and opportunities this iconic new facility will present for our region and our downtown core.”
Construction work on SMS Stadium will continue into the fall, and construction on the canopy structure overlooking the stage at SMS Stadium and the Molson Outdoor Rink will begin shortly as construction materials for the structure begin to arrive this month.
“Watching Shell Place come alive is incredibly exciting for everyone involved in the project, and we hope the community joins us in this journey as we work together to build the future, with our collective future in mind,” said Reid.
