FC Edmonton Youth Soccer Clinic brings professional soccer skills to local youth
(Fort McMurray, AB, February 10, 2014) – The FC Edmonton Youth Soccer Clinic hosted at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre February 7-9 was a tremendous success, with strong participation from local youth soccer players.
The FC Edmonton Youth Soccer Clinic, announced on November 27, 2013 as part of a partnership agreement between FC Edmonton and the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) that will also deliver the first regular season professional sports game in Wood Buffalo history at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place in 2015, generated a very enthusiastic response from local youth participants.
Kelsey Ellingson, a Grade Nine student from Fort Chipewyan who attended the clinic through the Mi KIDS program, a program administered through the RRC that provides barrier-free access to youth participation in sport and recreation in the Wood Buffalo region, said, “I really enjoyed the FC Edmonton Clinic because it showed me that by doing the warm up drills it can help me focus on my technique and keep control of the ball on the field. I learned the leadership skills needed to mentor and coach other kids in my community. It has been helpful for my own development as an athlete because everything I learned from the FC Edmonton Soccer Clinic helped me improve my skills as a soccer player, and I would love to participate in another clinic. I think the other players and coaches were amazing.”
The FC Edmonton Youth Soccer Clinic consisted of sessions for players from U4 to U16. The clinic included a meet and greet autograph session with the FC Edmonton players and coaches on February 7. This opportunity to work with the professional players and coaches from FC Edmonton was designed to assist in the development of youth soccer players in the region.
“It was a huge success from our point of view and we believe it could be the tip of the iceberg. We think that the more the word gets out about our partnership and what we can offer, our relationship will only improve. From my perspective, it looked like the kids were enjoying themselves and the coaches enjoyed themselves so we thought it was really well received and the community was very hospitable. It was a very enjoyable weekend,” said Colin Miller, FC Edmonton Head Coach.
The weekend hosted 167 youth players ranging in age from 3-15 years, and 20 coaches. Visiting FC Edmonton players Mallan Roberts and Massimo Mirabelli worked alongside Head Coach Miller and Assistant Coach Jeff Paulus to assist local players in developing their soccer skills throughout the weekend clinic.
“When we announced this partnership in the fall of 2013 we anticipated it would bring tremendous benefit to our community,” said Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “This weekend’s youth clinic was incredibly well received by our young athletes, and we believe that speaks to the long-lasting positive impacts these partnerships have. Thanks to the strong participation of our local youth and the Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association we were able to host a successful soccer clinic that not only helped with skill development but with fostering leadership skills in our young athletes and citizens.”
