FC Edmonton and MacDonald Island Park announce historic partnership
(Fort McMurray, AB, Wednesday November 27, 2013) – MacDonald Island Park and FC Edmonton Professional Soccer Club are excited to announce a new partnership that will deliver the first regular season professional sports game in Wood Buffalo history at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place in 2015. FC Edmonton further commits to a regular season game to be played at Shell Place in 2016.
FC Edmonton representatives Tom Fath, Owner, Rod Proudfoot, General Manager, and Colin Miller, Head Coach, joined Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor Melissa Blake and other dignitaries at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre to make the announcement to bring professional soccer to the Wood Buffalo region beginning with a three-day soccer clinic for youth soccer players in February, 2014. More details on FC Edmonton’s nationally televised and internationally live-streamed regular season game at Shell Place in June, 2015, including details on game opponents and game date, will be released in December, 2014, based on the North American Soccer League schedule.
“FC Edmonton Professional Soccer Club is very excited about this partnership and the opportunities that exist between MacDonald Island Park and our Club," said Rod Proudfoot, General Manager of FC Edmonton. "Both our organizations share a desire and a passion for excellence in sport, community engagement and development of our youth. We look forward to developing a full integration of activities during this partnership aimed at supporting these principles to the benefit of all parties.”
The FC Edmonton contingent and Mayor Blake were joined on Wednesday by community members CJ Phillips, Honourary Event Chair for the 2015 event, Ian Diaz, Technical Director of the Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association, Mike Cachia, Chair of the Regional Recreation Corporation Board of Directors and Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer of MacDonald Island Park, as FC Edmonton enters into a long-term partnership with MacDonald Island Park to build a relationship between the professional soccer club and the Wood Buffalo community.
The FC Edmonton youth soccer clinic, which will run from February 7-9 at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, will consist of sessions for players from U4 to U16 and will be two one-hour sessions led by FC Edmonton players and coaches. The clinic will include a meet and greet autograph session with the players and coaches on Friday, February 7 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, with snacks and refreshments provided to registered players. This opportunity to work with the professional players and coaches from FC Edmonton is designed to assist in the development of youth soccer players in the region.
“We are delighted to welcome a new partnership with FC Edmonton that will bring this community-minded professional sports organization to the Wood Buffalo region in February for a youth soccer clinic,” said Reid. “The clinic is just the first step in a partnership destined to have long-lasting positive impacts on youth soccer players, families and the community as a whole, particularly when Shell Place opens in 2015, presenting new opportunities for professional sport events and experiences. This is what happens when we build great facilities.”
FC Edmonton Professional Soccer Club was founded in 2009, and is currently the only Canadian team playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The NASL is comprised of eleven professional soccer teams from across the United States and Canada, such as the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the Atlanta Silverbacks and the New York Cosmos.
