Community reminded of final date to register for Fort McMurray Half Marathon
(Fort McMurray, AB, September 10, 2014) – The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo would like to remind the community the final date for registration for participation in the 2014 Fort McMurray Half Marathon is Saturday, September 13.
The Fort McMurray Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, September 14 and includes 21.1 km, 10 km, 5 km and 3 km road races and a Kids Fun Run. The inaugural marathon, held in September 2013, saw enthusiastic community support with close to 600 participants taking part in the event. Registration for the 2014 Fort McMurray Half Marathon will be accepted until 4:00 pm on September 13.
Registration for the 2014 marathon has been capped as follows: 3 km run, 30 participants; 5 km run, 160 participants; 10 km run, 250 participants and 21.1 km run, 200 participants. The Kids Fun Run has open registration and has not been capped. The annual Terry Fox Run also takes place on September 14, starting at 1:00 pm.
Online registration is available at macdonaldisland.ca where participants can also view the scheduled routes and start times for the various races. The Fort McMurray Half Marathon race package pickup will take place on Saturday, September 13 at Community Registration Day presented by Syncrude at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre.
“We are already seeing strong registration numbers for the 2014 Fort McMurray Half Marathon,” said Kelsey Stefanizyn, Fort McMurray Half Marathon Organizing Committee Event Chair and Events Manager of the RRC. “We would like to take this opportunity to remind interested individuals of the final date to register as we welcome this exciting event back to Fort McMurray. We would also like to advise the community of some closures to traffic and parking on MacDonald Island which will help to protect the safety of all participants in the marathon.”
Parking lot access at MacDonald Island Park will be restricted on Sunday, September 14 from 6:00 am – 3:00 pm. Only those individuals with proper parking pass credentials will be granted access. The only exceptions are as follows: construction vehicles, emergency vehicles, public transit, “ONE Pass’ holders and Miskanaw Golf Club patrons.
