Community invited to re-dedication of Terry Conroy Mini Ice and free youth skate
(Fort McMurray, AB, January 24, 2014) – The community is invited to attend the re-dedication of the mini ice surface at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre scheduled to occur on February 7, which will include a short ceremony as well as a free public skate for youth 12 and under from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
The Terry Conroy Mini Ice, named in honour of the late Terry Conroy, pays homage to the legacy Conroy left in the community over his many years of active participation as a minor hockey coach and enthusiast. Conroy may be best remembered for the backyard ice rink he created on an annual basis, always welcoming young athletes who wanted to practice their skating and hockey skills
“We are proud to continue to honour the memory of Terry Conroy,” said Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC). “At the re-dedication ceremony we will celebrate and acknowledge all that Mr. Conroy accomplished in this region through his many years of dedication to minor sport, particularly hockey. It is because of people like Mr. Conroy we are afforded the opportunities we have today in Wood Buffalo.”
The Terry Conroy Mini Ice re-dedication ceremony will include an opportunity for local youth 12 and under to participate in a free public skate on the ice surface bearing his name. The first 100 youth participants will be given a complimentary hockey jersey commemorating the re-dedication.
“The role of the RRC is to build for the future, meet the needs of the present, and honour the legacy of those who built recreation in this community,” said Mike Cachia, Chair of the Board of Directors for the RRC. “Through this re-dedication ceremony we will remember the legacy of Terry Conroy and all he contributed to recreation in this community, while celebrating the present and future of recreation in the Wood Buffalo region. We are delighted to welcome the Conroy family back to the community as they join us in this celebration.”
The Terry Conroy Mini Ice re-dedication ceremony will take place on Friday, February 7 at 3:00 pm and is open to the public. All youth 12 and under are invited to participate in the free public skate following the re-dedication ceremony. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
