Community comes together for City Centre McMurray Half Marathon weekend
(Fort McMurray, AB, September 15, 2013) – The inaugural City Centre McMurray Half Marathon weekend wrapped up on Sunday as a tremendous success for organizers and participants as community members took to the streets of downtown Fort McMurray to participate in the sold out event.
The weekend, which kicked off on Friday with a crowd-pleasing performance by Canadian icons and four-time Juno Award winners Our Lady Peace, culminated on Sunday with the event itself and a free performance by Juno Award winners Sloan and a community barbeque. Both weekend shows were presented by Rock 97.9 FM.
“The response from the community for this new event has been tremendous,” said Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor Phil Meagher, who acted as City Centre McMurray Half Marathon Honourary Chair. “Over 600 registrants laced up their running shoes to hit the pavement and challenge themselves and each other in the pursuit of excellence while having a lot of fun at the same time. I would also like to thank the countless volunteers that worked with the organizing committee to make the weekend possible.”
The City Centre McMurray Half Marathon included a Half Marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 3 km road races and a Kids Fun Run working in collaboration with the 33rd annual Terry Fox Run, which also took place on the route on Sunday. The routing of the races took participants on a path through the downtown core, starting and finishing at MacDonald Island Park.
“It is through the support of our partners and the community that events like this are a success, and a special thank you is due to the Wood Buffalo RCMP as they celebrate their centennial in our region. This first year has certainly set a strong precedent for what will become an annual marathon in the urban core of Fort McMurray, as we look to increase capacity and offer a full marathon in 2014,” said Rick Kirschner, Manager of Community Relations, City Centre McMurray and City Centre McMurray Half Marathon Co-Chair along with Co-Chair Jodie Mercier, General Manager of Sport and Recreation at MacDonald Island Park.
