Community celebrates together at Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo presented by Syncrude

Fort McMurray, AB, August 18, 2012 – Wood Buffalo demonstrated some of its famous ‘Big Spirit’ and engaged with the non-profit community in a major way at the third annual Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo at MacDonald Island Park on Saturday afternoon.

Over 70 exhibitors representing a diversity of non-profit organizations from across the region took part in the event, while close to 2,000 attendees helped celebrate and learn about the Wood Buffalo non-profit community. Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo also featured a collection of family-based entertainment and a barbeque-by-donation with all proceeds going to the non-profit organizations that provided volunteers for the event.

“This was the most successful Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo to date,” said Jeremy Irla, Chair of the Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo Steering Committee and Leisure and Community Services Supervisor at MacDonald Island Park. “It’s tremendous to see the level of engagement, interest and support that exists in our community for our non-profit organizations. We sincerely thank everyone for participating, especially Syncrude and our many community partners for making Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo possible.”

Syncrude Canada was title partner for Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo again this year. Event partners included all five local radio broadcasters – Mix 103.7 FM, 100.5 K-Rock, Country 93.3 FM, Rock 97.9 FM and KAOS 91.1 FM.

Non-Profit Sector Link Wood Buffalo presented the LINK Networking Breakfast, while the Fort McMurray Today was Volunteer Partner. Safeway, Sobeys and Save-On-Foods provided in-kind support for the barbecue.

The Steering Committee wishes a special thank you to the following non-profit organizations that provided volunteer support for Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo presented by Syncrude: Africa’s Promise Youth Leadership Club, Canadian Mental Health Association Wood Buffalo, Fort McMurray SPCA, Fort McMurray Swim Club, the Multicultural Association of Fort McMurray, Sanatan Mandir Cultural Society of Fort McMurray and YMCA of Wood Buffalo.

Earlier in the day, the LINK Networking Breakfast presented by Non-Profit Sector Link Wood Buffalo featured networking workshops and tips and a keynote address from Ian Hill, humanitarian, business leader, award-winning philanthropist and founder of Let Them Be Kids, a Canada-wide all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to building stronger communities at the grassroots level. Acting Mayor Russell Thomas delivered inspiring remarks to attendees on behalf of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
