Community advised of busy weekend at MacDonald Island Park May 2-4
(Fort McMurray, AB, May 1, 2014) – The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) advises the community of an upcoming busy weekend of events at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and Miskanaw Golf Club.
From May 2-4 the Edmonton Oilers are hosting a youth hockey clinic at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. This event, presented by Cenovus, includes a community barbecue on Friday evening as well as a two-day skills and dry land clinic for 100 local youth hockey players.
This weekend will also see the first full weekend of play at the Miskanaw Golf Course. The back nine opened on April 29, and the warm weather is expected to generate significant interest in the beginning of the golf season.
These events, coupled with a variety of annual popular community events taking place at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, may have an impact on traffic flow and parking at MacDonald Island Park. To accommodate facility members, 200 parking stalls will be reserved during the weekend for ONE pass holders. Members will be able to access this reserved parking by displaying their ‘ONE Pass’ identification card to security personnel.
“We are tremendously excited to welcome the Edmonton Oilers to the facility this weekend,” said Tim Reid, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “We will host out of town visitors as well as community members as they enjoy the variety of events and activities taking place at MacDonald Island Park. We thank everyone in advance for their support as we celebrate the arrival of spring with a full weekend of events.”
The RRC encourages the use of car-pooling and/or public transit to ease traffic congestion during the weekend. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo provides transit service between the Jubilee Centre and MacDonald Island Park every 15 minutes on Route No. 99.
