Canada Day 2016 celebration events at MacDonald Island Park announced
The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC), in collaboration with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), is pleased to announce the line-up of Canada Day celebration events that will take place at MacDonald Island Park on July 1 this year.
Canada Day 2016 in Wood Buffalo will kick off on the morning of July 1 with the annual Canada Day Parade. Shuttles to the parade will be available beginning at 9:30am at the front entrance of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. After the parade ends at Morrison Street, shuttles will also be available to transport parade attendees back to MacDonald Island Park to enjoy a full day of family-focused activities and entertainment.
Beginning at noon on July 1, children can enjoy a craft carnival, face painters, bouncy castles and public swimming at the Syncrude Aquatic Centre. Children’s entertainment presented by Kidomo will feature Main Stage performances from Dora the Explorer Sing-Along Adventure at 1:15pm and 3:00pm. A very special event taking place at 4:00pm at the Main Stage will be a visit from everyone’s favourite rescue dog, Marshall of Paw Patrol, for a meet and greet with local children.
From 4:00pm-6:00pm, the Fort McMurray Strongman Association will host a showcase in the parking lot beside the Main Stage, featuring a bus pull, tire flip and more.
The beer gardens will open at 12:30pm at the Fox Den Lounge, with evening entertainment beginning at 7:00pm. The entertainment features a variety of popular local musical performers, including Dan Tulk, Craig Moritz, and, the final act of the evening, Freedom’s Note.
“It is particularly exciting to announce the Canada Day events taking place this year at MacDonald Island Park,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “This spring we faced a significant challenge in our region, and members of our community were separated due to circumstances beyond their control. On July 1 we have an opportunity to come together and not only celebrate our nation’s birthday but also the strength and resiliency of our community. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to MacDonald Island Park for the annual Canada Day celebrations this year!”
The RRC also wishes to thank these community partners for their support:
