Blue Rodeo delivers stellar performance as finale of Nexen CanadaROCKS 2012
Record five-time Juno Award winners for Group of the Year and 2012 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees Blue Rodeo highlighted the finale of Nexen CanadaROCKS 2012 at MacDonald Island Park on Sunday night.
Blue Rodeo performed a full array of its iconic hits during a two-hour set, including “Try” “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet” and “5 Days in May” as they headlined a three-act evening that included Corb Lund and Doc Walker.
“Blue Rodeo was the perfect way to end what was a special weekend of Canadian music at Nexen CanadaROCKS,” said David Whitelock, Executive Director of Events Wood Buffalo. “The diversity of this community was reflected in the lineup that took the stage: From East Coast roots to Canadian country music, we had it all this weekend.”
On Saturday night, four-time Juno Award winner and international sensation K’naan headlined the main stage ahead of Classified, who led the crowd with “Oh Canada” prior to a Canada Day fireworks display that lit up MacDonald Island Park and downtown Fort McMurray.
Prior to Classified’s set, concert attendees were treated to a special performance by Rebirth Brass Band – which included a cameo performance on trombone from Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Mike Allen, who was joined on stage throughout Nexen CanadaROCKS weekend by Don Scott, MLA for Fort McMurray-Conklin and Associate Minister of Accountability, Transparency and Transformation.
Indie rock favourite and six-time Juno Award nominee Joel Plaskett Emergency was the headliner for a free concert on Friday night, while Hey Rosetta! kicked off Nexen CanadaROCKS 2012 in fine Newfoundland style.
“It was great to see the community come together and take in a great weekend of Canadian artists as we celebrated Canada’s 145th birthday,” said Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer at MacDonald Island Park. “We thank the team at Events Wood Buffalo and our title partner Nexen for working with us to deliver what was a great three days at the Island.”
