Arts community continues momentum with opening of A Walk in the Woods
(Fort McMurray, AB, April 30, 2013) – A Walk in the Woods, an exhibition featuring artworks from students at both Westwood Community High School and Composite High School, holds its grand opening on Thursday evening at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation.
A Walk in the Woods showcases each participating student’s journey as they looked into the musings of the Boreal forest prevalent in the Wood Buffalo region. The students were guided by First Nations artist Heather Shillinglaw, who is the guest speaker at the opening on Thursday.
Shillinglaw will be joined on Thursday by Russell Thomas, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
“It is this type of exhibition in partnership with Ms. Shillinglaw and students at Westwood and Composite that is essential to the success of the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation,” said Jodie Mercier, General Manager of Sport and Recreation at MacDonald Island Park. “We’re excited to do our part to foster the arts at the grassroots level in our community as we continue the momentum achieved at the record-setting Wood Buffalo Timeraiser presented by Suncor Energy.”
Volunteer Wood Buffalo hosted its second annual Timeraiser last week at the Gallery, as over 5,000 volunteer hours were raised by the community, which set a venue attendance record at the event.
A Walk in the Woods opens at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 and runs through May 18.
