Fort McMurray makes history on June 27 with first regular season CFL game
History was made on June 27 in Fort McMurray when the Toronto Argonauts took the field against the Edmonton Eskimos at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place in the first regular season Canadian Football League game played in the Wood Buffalo region.
The Northern Kickoff II featured the Argonauts as the home team in an exciting east vs. west match-up building on the success of the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell, the pre-season exhibition game featuring the Edmonton Eskimos and the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 13.
“What an incredible two weeks we have experienced in Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo,” said Michael Cachia, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, operators of Shell Place at MacDonald Island Park. “On June 13 and June 27 we had the opportunity to welcome the CFL, three CFL teams, coaches, support staff and officials and thousands of fans and community members to Shell Place to celebrate the grand opening of the facility and enjoy professional Canadian football. We are so grateful to our many partners, our dedicated volunteers and the community members who made these events possible and helped to make history in Wood Buffalo.”
