First annual YMMArtFest launches this week
(Fort McMurray, AB, July 22) – A partnership between MacDonald Island Park and the Wood Buffalo Artists Forum has resulted in the first annual YMMArtFest, a celebration and exploration of visual arts in the Wood Buffalo region.
YMMArtFest kicks off on Thursday, July 25 at 7:00 pm at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation. Themed as “Fiesta,” the evening is an exhibition of the works in the ‘LatinArt’ collection, and will include tacos as the featured food dish.
The visual arts extravaganza continues with an event from the Boreal Artist Institute on Friday July 26 with the “Who Let the Art Out” art workshop for children, running from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm at the Keyano Art Gallery. At this event children are be invited to explore different art media to create projects and enjoy a featured food dish of muffins.
Also on Friday July 26 the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the Artist in Residency program present “Studio Conversations”, an open house in AC132 at Keyano Theatre and Arts Centre, with the Wood Buffalo Artist in Residency artists. Four artists will share the projects in the studio while enjoying the featured tapas menu with attendees.
On Saturday July 27, from 11:00 am-3:00 pm the Gallery at Frames and More invites the community to sample cookies and explore the talents of exhibiting artists Carol Breen and Bill Martin. Breen will demonstrate Japanese stencil printing and Martin will showcase his work in photography.
Wrapping up YMMArtFest on Saturday evening from 4:00 pm-8:00 pm is the “Graffiti Project” in partnership with the Justin Slade Youth Foundation at the Haxton Centre in Borealis Park. Youth can enjoy pizza while pursuing creative expression through graffiti projects designed to be fun and showing respect to the community.

YMMArtFest is intended to become an annual event to showcase, explore, and enjoy visual arts in the Wood Buffalo region and allow community members to both participate in and enjoy a variety of visual art mediums.
