Learn to swim in Fort McMurray at MacDonald Island Park. MIP offers multiple levels of swimming lessons for all ages and skill levels. Red Cross swimming lessons for preschoolers, kids, teens and adults are available. For more than 65 years Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety programs have maintained a tradition of excellence.

Preschool Age Swim Lesson Progression Chart

Red Cross Preschool Parented


Age Group: preschool

Give your child the gift of aquatic fun and swimming at an early age. Songs, games and introductory swimming skills will make your child comfortable and happy in the water.

Red Cross Preschool Sea Otter


Age Group: preschool

Transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the Instructor. All skills are assisted by the Instructor. Swimmers enter this level when they are 3 years of age.

Red Cross Preschool Salamander


Age Group: preschool

Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sea Otter. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim two metres, further develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide...

Red Cross Preschool Sunfish


Age Group: preschool

Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Salamander. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim five metres, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase their front and back glide with kick, and develop their rollover glide, side glide and front swim...

Red Cross Swim Kids 1


Age Group: child

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Red Cross Swim Kids 2


Age Group: child

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Floatation Device (PFD).

Red Cross Swim Kids 3


Age Group: child

This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.

Red Cross Swim Kids 4


Age Group: child

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Red Cross Swim Kids 5


Age Group: child

This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, and whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

Red Cross Swim Kids 6


Age Group: child

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists.

Red Cross Swim Kids 7/8


Age Group: child

Building on previous coursework, Red Cross Swim Kids 7/8 will continue to enhance skills and endurance, as well as introduce swimmers to basic concepts around lifesaving and potential dangers of open water.

Red Cross Swim Kids 9/10


Age Group: child

Red Cross Swim Kids 9/10 focuses on refining fitness and swimming techniques to promote safety and endurance in the water.

Red Cross Teen & Adult Lessons Basics Level 1 & 2

Red Cross Swim Basics is a two-level learn-to-swim program for adults and teens. These courses are designed to develop or increase swimmers’ comfort in the water through basic flotation, movement, and breathing skills and to foster the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to stay safe in, on, and around the water.

Red Cross Teen & Adult Lessons Swim Strokes Level 3

Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens, and for participants in Red Cross Swim Kids who require additional work on a stroke to complete the level. The program is designed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer in consultation with the Water Safety Instructor, and increase swimming distances and proficiency
