Public Engagement Results

The community engagement process commenced on April 16 and included 12 in-person sessions facilitated by MacDonald Island Park Chief Operating Officer Tim Reid. Feedback, comments, and votes were submitted both at the aforementioned sessions and online at macdonaldisland.ca.

Overall, 601 feedback forms were submitted by community members. Of those submissions, 86% of participants selected Concept B, or full project build-out, while 12% of participants chose Concept A. Neither Concept A nor Concept B was selected by only 2% of the community.

Based on information gathered from community engagement, a recommendation will be made to the MacDonald Island Park Board of Directors. If the Board of Directors approves the recommendation, it will initiate a final design price review in consultation with Architecture: ATB, 360 Architecture, Clark Builders and Turner Construction Company."

Although our public consultations are complete we still welcome community feed back via email.

Would very much like to see new upgraded Baseball diamonds for my kids to enjoy in years to come.  Thank you for allowing our opionions on this site.
I am a baseball player in Fort McMurray and our large fields are much worse than Red Deer, Okotoks, Lethbridge, St Albert and Sherwood Park.  We need a real baseball stadium !
having my children play sports in Fort McMurray I have seen children move out of town because of greater potential to develop down south. Let us show that Fort McMurray has a lot to offer and that moving down south is no longer a better option.Let us keep our families here and no longer be seen as a place were moms or dads work and were they keep there kids back down south.
We need to start building for our future now as we are already extremely low on recreation space for our community.
Our kids deserve a nice diamond they can be proud of when their hosting teams from out of town.
Full concept needs to be built
My daughter has been playing with minor league baseball for 4 years now. It is a great organization and we need the baseball/softball tournament center. Thank-you
Many residents spend years here without enjoying our amazing and histori river systems.  Adding a Marina is an innovative concept that connects the community with nature and with our history.
Baseball is a growing sport and this field would be great to further develop players
More Not for profit space
is there ample parking? Hard to find parking now during large or multiple events
Discouraged that float planes will not be able to utalize Snye. Think developmentshould be done right the first time. Looks like a lot of through and consideration has gone into the design and it will be an great addition to the island. It will increase tourism dollars although a great deal will be lost with the loss of the float planes.
WOW CONCEPT B IS AWESOME AND WOULD ATTRACK ANY FAMILY TO OUR CITY !!!ITS TIME FORT MC MURRAY GETS WHAT IT DESERVES MONEYS AND THIS TYPE OF FACILTITY  GENERATED IN OUR COMMUNITY !!TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME !!!!
Concept b is by far the better choice, it will easily align the needs of community as well allow the city to host world class events.  Development of the golf course, marina and the field house will allow current sport to expand and provide better facilities for new and current athletes, the addition of the baseball/softball  tournament center is an opportunity to host not only sporting events but also concerts.  The amount of money that is required to build concept b will be well worth it and will be returned o the community 10 times over!
We will get much more use out of 4 small diamonds rather than one professional field!
The baseball tournament centre is absolutly required in addition to supporting the growing needs of the program, it wil allow us to take advantage of future opportunities that we cant currently. The vision of woodbuffalo needs this
More outdoor programing for winter time.  IE more bonfires outside - like the "Fairmount experience" - horse carriage rides, picture opportunites depending on what's going on over the community/nationally - ie if winter games - a podium that people can take pictures  etc
I like concept B with the exception of the baseball/softball tournament centre. Soccer is a more popular sport than baseball/sotball and I'm not sure that particular centre is going to be used to maximum capacity. I do like with concept B the marina, fitness expansion, field house expansion and golf development. I think they would be well used. I like everything in conceopt A. Spcae for non-profits is essential and should include storage/gym space also.
wOULD LIKE TO SEE THE BALL FIELD COMPLETED TO ALLOW FOR THE SEMI PRO BASEBALL TEAM TO PLAY FOR FORT MCMURRAY
I think our basaball organization deserves a world class ball field to practice and play on.
MIPS board needs baseball to be a big part of the expansion. The board is forgetting the money invested in MacDonald Island that led to the naming of the ball fields and we can help in the future!
as a 30 year plus member of the Miskanaw golf club I would like to know what impact this has on the effects of finishing the golf course. We are in Year 8 of a previous 6 year plan to renovate the course and it is frustrating to be paying full membership for half a course. We were considering lifetime membership but would like a commitment to complete.
A marina will be a good addition. Having a quality ball diamond will be great as well.
Concept B offers more space for not for profits than concept A
The more facilities we can build now the better for the community and the less expensive it will be. Build Concept B!
The designs are fantastic however I wonder if all the outdoor lighting is going to create light pollution. I am concerned because we do get great light shows from the northern lights and the outside lighting will interfere with that light show.
A Baseball Field would open the possibility to create a minor league or even a professional league here in our city
Also be sure to make space for a cell phone tower...service is horrible on the island.
Baseball/softball facilities are required in Fort McMurray,
We need this for our community. I worry about the transit/parking but i'm sure this is all par of the plan. Excellend goal/design!
B looks great, will the football field have nice covered bleachers on each side, and a field house with a restroom, for equipment storage, and boys to changing room on both sides?
I would like to see a baseball filed because this sport is growing rapidly in this city. Hopefully we could have a semi pro team
It's finally nice to have a place where Fort McMurray can have a decent concert place. Concerts can boost Fort Mc's tourism.
Love the expansion, great idea for the community, and money well spent !
Baseball fan for all my life (56 right now)
This city is famous for being behind the line when it comes to amenities. Other similar sized citys in our Province and even outside of our Province have better facilities and will continue to until we decide to not put up with being 3rd class anymore. We are tired of waiting in line, driving on crap roads, and being denied things that the revenue coming out of the area should easily support. The only thing Fort McMurray seems to lead in is passing out traffic tickets and until that mindset changes we will continue to be mired in mediocrity.
It is wonderful to see Mac Island growing and expanding! I can't wait to see what the next 3 years will bring!
The fitness expansion in totally needed as the current amenities do not meet the needs of the number of participants, everything is too crowded, so I end up spending more workout time at Keyano.
I would like to see the community support baseball. This is a sport that is played by many age groups in our city.
We don't want any bridges across the syne
I want to know how much more tax dollars are going towards this. I do not have a membership, and yet my taxes are paying for a large portion of the fees for this existing facility. I don't think that is fair or a way to be sustainable.
Can you imagine having to seek a private place to eat every time you were hungry? One of the reasons women identify for not breastfeeding their babies is discomfort with breastfeeding in public. Breastfeeding is normal food for babies. Fort McMurray is the first city in Alberta to be implementing Breast Feeding Initiative (BFI). This is truly exciting . A Breastfeeding Friendly city ensures women feel welcome and comfortable breastfeeding in public. Staff are trained to not to tell women to cover-up or to leave a public area. Breastfeeding friendly signs are placed at entrance ways, and spaces are designed to provide comfortable seating in public areas - not just for breastfeeding women of course but for anyone who needs them including our growing senior population. Also, a breastfeeding friendly city provides quiet and private parenting space (not a washroom) within to facilitate privacy if requested by the mother. This space can also be for mothers giving babies artificial feeds as they also may need a place where they can sit quietly to feed their babies without distraction. It makes very good business sense too. It has been shown that businesses that become ‘Breastfeeding Friendly’ not only experience a tremendous amount of positive community recognition, but also find there is an increase in business from childbearing families – both desirable for better business! Our goal is to have all our shopping mall and public places to be able to proudly display that we are a breastfeeding friendly community right here in this amazing city Fort McMurray. With the new expansions underway there is no greater opportunity to create these little spaces, giving opportunities for Breastfeeding Families
Marina is a must! We must take pride in our waterfront. There are huge opportunities to enjoy this space with our families, and take full advantage of the Athabasca River!
We don't need all the little ball diamonds since timberlea has expanded. I like the idea of having a fort mcmurray baseball team.
Baseball/Softball not all that popular in Fort McMurray.  Would be wasted $.  Building a bowling alley and WHL hockey area
Build it and they will come
McDonald Island is the first place I take anyone who comes to visit, it definately has the wow factor...and shows that fort mcmurray has alot to offer families.  I believe the baseball/softball tournament centre is an amazing addition, and I love the "Go Big or Go Home" feel it brings!!  I am very proud to belong to this community!
Dont need more trails why would you drive to get to a trail?
I don't see the need for baseball facility at this time.  Not enough parking stalls have been allocated to the non-profit area. No pictures or discussion on what the gold club development is in concept B.  the cost for the concept B does not include the cost to replace the 4 ball diamonds affected.
You should have a combative room for affordable rent (ie: cheap enough a school team could rent it) for sport such as Judo and Wrestling
Prefer options that will provide artist and non-profit more spaces for display, studio and other activities. Also need good restarurant and coffee shops in the facilities so that there will be a gathering point or a resting location. Right now the services provide in the Existing facility is really minimum and does not match up with the scale of the facility.
MUST WE CONSTANTLYSPEND BIG MONEY ON ENTERTAINMENT WHEN THERE IS SO MUCH ELSE THAT NEEDS TAKEN CARE OF?  AND HOW MANY MILLIONS OVER-BUDGET WILL THIS PROJECT GO?
the larger ball field is better for multi use, concerts etc.
if Concept B is created, then there is a very strong chance that a professional baseball team will be brought to Fort McMurray. Having a pro team in this city does wonders for our image and community building as it gives the residents, and visitors, something to rally behind! There is no need to have multiple ballparks at MacIsland since there are other ones to be utilized around the city. We need to bring more pro-sports into this region in order to continue to build our community (HOMEtown rather then BOOMtown)
The people of this community deserve a center that can keep up with the talent and vision we have, for now and for the future.
I've lived in this commuity for seventeen years and for most of that time I have seen very little growth in the way of liesure, sport an recreational facilities. Thank God for Macdonald Island Park expansion thus far! It is my  sincere hope  that the expansion continue. Macdonald Island Park has made a world of dirfference to our community. It is something to be proud of, and a little community pride is something we could all use a lot more of!
This type of expansion is exactly what this community needs.  So often this town builds new things, but then once completed the mind set is...use and abuse it, we aren't making any changes.  We see this all the time.  Look at the state our downtown core is.  It was all new at one point, and it hasn't changed to evolve with the community.  This expansion tells the community that MacDonald Island Park is committed and passionate about our home town and we will continue to bring exceptional service and products for as long as we are welcomed.  This should be the standard for all development projects!
I am in full support of the full Concept B Plan. I think the Baseball Diamond, along with the Non-Profit Centre are vital for the needs of our community.
Concept B seems to have it all, so it won't be necessary to keep expanding and upgrading for future use.
If you cant build it all then I suggest not at all and only if we can keep our float planes!
Sports should not have to compete with each other for space. You really need to relook at your planes and do it all. Why is there so much support for beer ball and not our kids ball. I have played the adult league and no first hand that drinking does happen that is how the name beer ball, softball, slow pitch. All the same. Try supporting the kids ball from ages 4 to 18. After 18 it is beer ball. What are we telling our kids. Build for the kids not beer ball and put the beer ball back using the school diamonds like we did when we played slow pitch
Was there ever an archaeological dig done to the site of John McDonald's former homestead?  I believe there may be some of his family buried near his homestead on MacIsland.
Concept b aims one baseball diamond directly at parking stalls and one into traffic, has this been addressed?
make sure their is somting for everyone if possible in the expansion.
We want baseball
A good idea for another expansion would be an indoor skatepark.
I firmly believe the Fort McMurray community DOES NOT need a full baseball stadium as shown in Concept 'B'. I don't understand why Mac Island would invest millions of dollars in a project that can't be utilized all year round. I understand there has been talk of a professional baseball team wanting to coming to town, but honestly, I think the franchise will fold or leave town with a year or so. Why? Well first and foremost, the travel cost for this team would be outrageous considering where the other teams in the league are located - southern USA, and Hawaii. Also, I think the novelty will wear off fast as people in this community travel alot when school is out during the summer months. Secondly, parking is a major issue. I recently went to the Spring Trade Show held at Mac Island and was forced to park on the very same field where the stadium is proposed to be built. I also attended the KISS concert held last year at Mac Island and needless to say, public transportation in and out of Mac Island was atrocious. As a long-time community member I respectly share these thoughts; I am sure Mac Island will make the right desicion based on the needs of the community, taking into consideration the budget they have to work with.
good project for wood buffalo community it will provide more spaces for non profit sector to be together and have affordable rent
As a baseball player in Fort Mac I feel the baseball field would be an amazing to help further the sport in Fort Mac as well as to help better every person in the world of sport in our community
A baseball stadium is a must!
Love the architecture for football field. We need to build for our future capacity of 200K people
I am concerned about parking but other than that it looks great.  Your marina could be 10 times the size (and should be).  200 moorings would help pay for a decent chunk of the project; and people would pay a great deal of money for them.
Consider future possibility of including recreation facilities for our canine companions, off leash areas, water parks for dogs, trails to walk your dogs. All this could be adjacent to a new state of the art SPCA facility and canine rehabilitation centre. You could hold super dog events, agility classes etc.
beer leage baseball - check field rentals on St Anne's Field - only need 2 more fields between concept A & B
My whole family is involved with baseball/softball.  This must be included in the expansion.  Why postpne what you know will need to be included later?
Looks good but it needs a skate park, bowling, zip lines and laser quest.
Please be sure to make the community space, a gathering space for cultiural groups with a stage and a huge kitchen where you can bring your own ethnic foods.
Baseball is an excellent team sport and provides a positive experience for my children.  I'd really like to see a formal venue for Fort McMurray to host a professional baseball team.
Lets build MacIsland to showcase our region...wtih these added facilities it will draw people to our region.
The concept for the stage is pretty, however, with our harsh environment I think something more practical in the way of shelter over the stage area would be prudent.  Also would like to see some sheltered picnic areas scattered throughout, so that people on a lower budget would have somewhere to enjoy the day.  Not sure that we need a tournament centre.
Fort McMurray deserves the very best! Concept B includes the Baseball/Softball Tournament Centre which is NOT included in Concept A along with the Marina. Wonderful additons to MacIsland. The Baseball/softball field will enable us to host world class events for those sports. We currently don't have great facilities for those sports. The youth of our community deserve this!!
This is why we love baseball...watching this gives me the chills every time! Our kids should get to experience this same feeling.
Marina to the max!!!
I really like the idea of a stadium! It would be a great experience for the younger crowd to sit in a stadium to watch a game they love.  Even though it's nice to have more fields with Concept A, the 2 stadiums is definitely a better plan.
Breastfeeding Friendly Community Initiative
My kids love baseball, they play winterball and minor baseball in the summer.  My husband and I also play softball with the bp's league and I play in the womens league as well.  Baseball/Softball is a huge sport in Fort McMurray. Many teams that try to enter, can't because there are not enough fields to playon.  I think this is a must have for the expansion.
Concept b is the better option, but another swimming area would be a GREAT expansion item as the pool is generally packed (in the kiddie area areas atleast)...pleae look at expanding that area in the near future! : ) love macisland!
I think at a bear min. the stuff in concept A would greatly benefit the sports community in fort mcmurray. Drawing bigger interest to our city from outside communities who would be more willing to do the travel involved in coming up here with modern up-to-date state of the art facilities as outlined in the concept. I know if given an opportunity to use the turf fields for football we would be able to upgrade our programs that we offer to kids in fort mcmurray and surrounding areas.
How much worse will it be when MIP triples in size?
Parking issues (lack of)
Parking will probably be a problem, should develop more spaces
Have youth been consulted so that things like BMX/Skateboarding and other interests of youth outside formal sport organizations have been represented?
This stadium is a must fo rour youth. Please  carry through with Concept B!
i think that a second dog park would be a great addition to mi, not to mention that our four legged friends would love the off leash experience...
Make sure that there is a soccer field.
Thew facilicties should really include ideally indoor beach volleyball courts or at least some outdoor beach volleyball courts. Not only is it a great activity for the whole family but it is easy to piick up and form community leagues around. Currently the only realy place is in borealis park and that faciility is mediocre at best.
Add a Bowling Alley and we're good to go!
Make a bike friendly indoor skatepark! It would be the only operational indoor park in Alberta attracting people from all over. It's practical because of our long winters and still useful in summer during rain and windy days.
The baseball/softball tournament centre looks great!
We have far more pressing infrastructure needs in this municipality right now than expanding Macdonald Island. I also question the ability to manage the costs on this project given the significant overruns during the previous expansion.
Parking looks like it will be a concern
Sorry that I missed your information sessions - just didn't realize they were happening.  I would love to see an outdoor market incorporated into the facility.  I am from the East Coast (New Brunswick) and we have farmers markets every Saturday morning throughout the summer - where the community comes together as a social outing (they serve breakfast - which is operated by volunteers (community groups) to raise funds).  This market would be a great concept for the community because it allows the various ethnic groups and people with hobbies to sell their wares.  Given that retail space in Fort McMurray is so expensive = the vendors could rent space and I would expect that the following items would be offered - home baked goods, samosas (really popular), mademade articles, flowers, fresh fruit and veggies, ethnic cooking, fudge,
hopefully a lot cheaper than what this place cost........
I can imagine sitting enjoying (pro/ semi-pro) baseball games in the summer at the new diamond; afternoon games or night games lit by our long hours of sunshine.  I also think we don't promote our waterways and shorelines enough, and a beautiful marina area would be a positive addition to the city.  Any golf development would be well used.
I'm here on behalf of FMMBA and the Father Merc Baseball Academy and believe a baseball stadium would be an asset not only to youth baseball but to the community as a whole!
Impressive
As a baseball player and keeping in mind future generations, I think this tournament centre is an essential part to Fort McMurray
concept B is by far the better design, it allows the capability to possibly acquire semi pro baseball as well, soccer?
Looks great! So exciting!
Don't cheap out, it's Fort Mac! Go for op[tion B!!
Spectacular! Conceptually is this the Finished Product - ALL Phases? 'Bout to Mount a Independently Organized (MI Board Presentation) to FUN-Raise $$$ 4 a 'DOME #ONE' Field Stadium: Year Round Multi-Purpose. Game On! 'best greg
With Fort Mcmurray minor baseball association - build the ballpark...
Concept B allows us to have to really be proud of.  It goes beyond what we needed last year and finally looks to plan for the future.
I agree with the addition of the ball fields if there is an alternative slowpitch field created so as a community we don't end up with less. It is frustrating that we have to fight to get our needs met when the baseball community obviously requires more fields!
Lots of room for expansion - eliminate 3 holes of golf back to an 18 hole course
The ball diamond is a stupid idea. Dont waste money
I like the idea of all the big sports facilities in the same place, downtown is perfect...if they ever get the bridge done!  Also, where is the bridge across teh SNYE???  That is needed or the parking will be far too small.  BUILD B and finish the sport campus at MacDonald Island
I believe that Baseball/ Softball concept needs to be included in Concept A
Concept A, but with the four baseball field have all the infields at the center. that way the outfield of ball diamonds could be used as overflow for big concerts. Use articial grass on football and baseball fields. Would stand up better to concerts and early spring training.
I suggest to have an in-door lawn tennis...
this would all be great I would also like to see a bowling alley built with the one in gregoire closed
The community should build to the needs of tomorrow today.
I feel most everything was in the first plan at lesser dollars. With the exception of badminton. Dissipointed!
Still need uptown rec centre to coincide.
Don't take away the ball diamonds.
Badminton does not need to be in tier 1
Again, what is going to be done combat the problem at this facility currently with lack of parking?? Why do we never see a solution for this? The as shown will reduce the current amount of avaliable parking, which isn't sufficient for the current facility. Why not plan to build a large parking garage with paid parking like in other cities and loacations in the world? It great to have these facilities, but if you can't get there to enjoy the vents due to lack of parking, and our horrible transit service, what is the point of building these facilities.
Very cool. I like the plan B with the on large baseball diamond makes sense if we are having a professional team in the region. Multiple small diamonds are already located around the community and even so there would be convenience in doing a tournament in one location I believe us as a community will receive great amusement and family experience at the larger professional base diamond filed game.
Multi-millions of dollars have been spent by the municipality building and maintaining slow pitch and softball fields/facilities, lighted football fields with artificial turf...which is great for our community.  However, almost  no municipal funds have been spent on baseball facilities over the last 20 years.
Baseball is lame, but the marina is not. Vote for the multi-sport area with the marina.
enough $$ have been put into mac island.  Let's start building community arenas/diamonds and start splitting north and south fort mcmurray into two 'divisions' for sports.
Keep the pavillion roof, love it!
looks great, love having another field house and dedicated badminton courts.  This is the time to build this.  I like everything in Concept B except the extra smaller baseball diamonds as those will be empty most of the time.  The bigger baseball stadium makes some sense in it is a place to hold the baseball games that get bigger crowds (like finals, or a pro team).  I see way more value in making them into parking spaces or additional revenue earners such as mini-golf, go-karts, or movie theatre.  If we start getting bigger summer fairs (with rides and such) can they be put on the football field and larger baseball diamond or is there no access to get big trucks in?  That would make more sense than giving up parking space.
The designs look great.  Curious as to the size of the office rooms/cubicles.
Parking is a major conern - pay parking maybe? Or a parkade?
I look forward to seeing how this input is accumulated and communicated back to the public and council as I could find no feedback from first round of public consultation.
No baseball no go!
i like the two size baseball thing and that bridge across the snye is an awesome idea
KEEP THE BALL FIELDS DON'T NEED A MASSIVE   BALL FIELD BETTER TO HAVE ONE  WITH SEATING  FOR ABOUT  500 TO  1000 AT HENIGAR FIELD OR SAP. PLEASE PUT A ROOF ON ON THE STADIUM SO THE COMMUNITY CAN USE IT YEAR ROUND. IT IS A LOT OF MONEY FOR A FACILITY THAT ONE CAN REALLY ONLY USE 4 MONTHS OF THE YEAR  AND FOR 30% MORE OF THE ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION COST ADD A ROOF TO MAKE IT USABLE FOR 12 MONTHS OF THE YEAR AND A RETRACTABLE ONE WOULD BE THE BEST OF BOTH  WORLDS. IF WE WANT TO DEVELOP THE REGION'S SPORT SYSTEM TO BE THE BEST IN CANADA WE NEED A LARGE INDOOR SPORT AND ATHLETIC FACILITY
I play in the slow pitch league and it would be a shame to lose the four existing baseball diamonds that are already here at Mac Island.
we need more basketball facilities
If you can't include all sports then don't build it.
Fort Mcmurray has always built things that are too small. As soon as the project is completed the community has outgrown the service or building!  Build big think outside the bubble ! This is a very fast growing city that needs Immediate attention to all urban needs.
The Current ballparks are a disgrace to our community, and totally not comfortable as a parent. I ask you to please consider a full expansion, including the ball centre.
I think having the baseball tournament center is a great plan! There are so many children in the community that started out playing tball and have grown up playing baseball. We have so many more who deserve this same opportunity and what better way to give it to them by having a center designed for their sport.Thank-you in advance.
Not including a Baseball stadium in Mac Island expansion would be a very short sighted decision.
wow great stuff. Thanks for making it a choice of the people in this community and care.
upgrades to the golf course are needed  1600 for a membership is very expensive..maybe include a gym pass with the golf.  fairways and tee blocks are so uneven its extremely hard to get a true lie
Overall the expansion plans look excellent & it will be very exciting to see the plans come to reality.  However, I must say I'm disappointed in the space & design for the NFP shared space centre.  The design has changed extensively from a year ago & now it is no longer really a centre but rather a 2nd floor corner of offices & cubicles with limited ground floor visibility.  Also, it is very hard to see the detail of the proposed NFP shared space from the online presentation so perhaps I'm missing some detail but it looks like the space will now only accommodate 30 desks/ units versus the original 30-50 organizations proposed.  And, it does not appear to have its own kitchen, storage or reception area.  These central meeting places are key to a collaborative NFP shared space centre.  In the end, I recognize that this space is being designed for sports & recreation NFP use however I suspect there will be much disappointment once social/ community NFPs realize that this really won't be a shared space centre but rather a place where they can lease a desk.  I think we need to clearly explain this to the NFPs & push the RMWB for an additional nonprofit space centre in the community that meets the original intent.  Whether it is at MacDonald Island or not is to be seen but in the end, what is being proposed will not meet the expectations or needs of the social/ community focused nonprofit organizations.  My role with Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo is to work with MI and others to find the appropriate solutions so I will continue to work with Michele Taylor and Tim Reid to do what we can with this shared space and to promote development of other shared space in the community for nonprofits.
As for the boat dock, that part of the river seems very shallow and plant infested, correct me if I'm wrong. It is also a wildlife habitat, Ducks and geese are found there regularly. How will these concerns be addressed? I hope we don't plan to kill off another bit of nature in the name of progress. For these reasons I like concept b but am opposed to the boat dock. Unless it's perhaps regulated and limited to unmotorized vehicles and enforced.
I like Concept B for the marina and tournament centre but what of the float planes on the Snye. This could be considered a heritage question that may well have been raised.
This community has more than its share of active people who enjoy family events.  The need for this type of venue is clear!!
Looking forward to the badminton facility.
Keep up the premier quality touches!
we need to consider all sports....
we need a baseball stadium
Concept B offers more options, and provides a facility that will be able to host major events.
This looks fantastiic.  You must have a great marketing department.
I feel we should go with concept B as it will give our community more options for recreation in the future as well as promote Fort McMurray as a city that has something for everyone.
Don't bugger around. Do the whole job properly while you have Tim here to make sure it comes in on time and on budget
we want a baseball stadium
BIGGER GYM YAY
Could the stage roof be used for BMX performance?
I think plan be does a better job of planning for the future growth of our city. I have a son who currently plays hockey, plays baseball and would like to curl. We use the swimming pool as a family and have adult shildren who use faicilities for exercise and swimming.  MacDonald Island has 10000 full time memberships being used. This will only increase as our population grows.
Satellite locations - the city has km's of trails already is $5M more justifiable?
I think that expanding the island is a great idea, however i think that due to the timeframe and budgetary issues which sorrounded the first expansion that realistic dates should be set out.
need more parking. spring trade show was razy trying to park. fix this before expanding.
put a roof on it
All the facilties would definitely be nice but the main concern I have is where is everyone going to park?  There is no mention of how that will be overcome.
I want concept A with 4 ball diamonds as the community can use the field, unless 4 new baseball/softball fields are created in the city, BUT why are there no docks facilities available in Concept A? Are the docks wheelchair accessible? Are there docks for fishing into the Clearwater...where I'm told the fish are biting? Are the docks wheelchair/ universal accessabilble?
Slo pitch in this community needs these four fields.  The big diamond will only be utilized by a small group of hard ball players
This will be a great start to making the downtown a fabulous place to live and play.
Amazing facility, i love coming off a long day at work and then pumping a hard, heavy chest day... going to look great on the beach this summer and its all thanks to macdonald island!!! Whooraahh
My family and I are moving to Fort Mc Murray in the fall and I was wondering if there is any chance that you will be incorporating Dragon Boating to the many activities that you offer? I am heavily involved in the teams in Northern B.C. If you would like any information please contact me!
Please. Do not forget upgrade tennis cort this sammer.!!!
Outdoor Field & Events Venue, Community Pavillion, Shared Space & Conference Facility for NPOs and Community are of critical importance
Gym is too cramped
Ensure marina is inclusive of all non-motorized sports, canoe, kayak, paddle boats etc. Keep the float planes there.
Also, what is the chance that a women's only fitness centre might be included in an expansion? I think there is a high demand for something like this in Fort McMurray looking at the demographics...
Need baseball stadium - Reddeer Okotoks, lethbridge
I think having a baseball center is very important. The fitness expansion would also be very beneficial. The others are great added bonuses.
Kids should have access to all sporting activities in the community and a baseball/Softball centre is as mush needed as a hockey arena!
Baseball stadium should be built up at the Timberlea Athletic Park where other diamonds and parking already exist.  It would also be a catalyst for re-developing the existing diamond that is too big and not good for competition. The softball diamonds need to be replaced somewhere else if two are taken out. The proposed plan has balls flying over the fence and into traffic (smaller diamonds).  Make sure that a temporary roof can be added to the outdoor stadium easily for all large events.  Consider what the primary use of this space will be outside and how concerts and events will impact the playing surface from trucks and equipment potentially driving on the turf (vendors/service vehicles for concerts/emergency vehicles etc.) parking is a concern but may work with the bigger picture city centre plan. Consider how bussing for major events will work with the utility road removed. Consider using a ferry system from the bottom of confederation way area to the Island instead of major traffic in the downtown core. it would create an exciting Island experience for people and in the winter encourage people to ski-doo over to the Island from the same area.  It would be great to use the marine area as a gathering place for ski doo's in the winter except that the noise may be annoying.  Really think about how you can incorporate something that makes us different from anything else in Canada. Make it an arts and culture hub too. Create opportunities for events like festival of the trees (outdoors in the winter and outdoor ice shows). Badminton is a popular sport and it would be fantastic if we had a facility plan that would allow for major event hosting. Awesome concept. Can't wait until building begins.
Where are the facilities shown in the pictures above located in relation to the present facility?
I think Concept B positions us for more world-class opportunities and more effectively ties in the Snye.
If possible please increase the number of offices for nonprofits available
very important due to volume of people using gym expanding the gym would definitely make staying fit more pleasurable. Having to constantly wait to use equipment will drive people away.
Will the expansion be providing a theatre?
I have lived in Fort McMurray for 12 years and my Family spends a lot of time in the current facility since the recent expanson and I would really like to see concept B. I am so very happy with this facility in the region!!!
need expansion for the weight room. Getting busier all the time
There are a huge amount of children practicing baseball in Fort McMurray all year long. Concept B will expand this activity
Design of baseball diamond is old - should match innovative design of the rest of the facility
Build more showers; as the current ladies washroom only has 3.  Having 10 toilets and only 3 showers is obviously an oversight into what is actually required for the amount of people using the facility.Having to line up to shower is ridiculous when there are only 3 showers. Mens showers should NOT be communal. This is 2012, not the 70s.A Family Washroom should also be built.  A clock in the washrooms would be great.  $10 well spent. Have music in the washroom; free- the front desk desk can turn the radio on. Please take this into consideration as obviously filling out comment cards are a waste of MacDonald Island members time. Social Media will be the next avenue.
Concept B is the preferred options if your a Fitness Centre user.  We are already at max capacity and our equipment cannot withstand our usage.  We are replacing equipment years before its suppose too.  With over 20,000 visits per month in the Fitness Centre, we need a bigger space with more equipment to keep up with the growing demands.
This plan is great but only we have a team to play here otherwise it is a waste of money and smaller fields for anyone would make more sense. Thank you
Having a 3000 seat baseball stadium is a great idea and opens the city up for many big events. A professional baseball team in Ft. McMurray is a great idea and I can't think of a better management team then West Pro Productions when it comes to professional sports. The baseball venue will unlock many possibilities and only enhance the image Ft. McMurray currently holds as a baseball hot bed.
Ensure when creating these items - you keep the WOW effect in mind :)
I have 3 chirldren. I would like to include them into the program during the outdoor activities.
community needs the additional facilities and a focal point for our community
very difficult to bring in teams from other cities if you don't have the excellent facilities to support it
Other Alberta communities of similar population...Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Okotoks, Red Deer, etc all have stadiums with similar capacity.
I would support option A with reservations arround operational funding. Build it like you were going to have to pay to run it for the next 100 years. Also currently i access approx 30% of the amenities i would like to due to parking and access. If you havent got parking and transit available dont bother!
Great idea and would enhance the community - I do not notice a parkade in the plans or budget.  The existing facilities run out of parking for some events - ie trade show.  How will people park with more facilties and less area to park in?  Public transit is an option most will be unlikely to take in the short to medium term.  Without convenience, people may not attend - especially in winter.  The plan should include adequate on-site parking, "park and ride" facilities and provisions for transit connections to the downtown core and residential sectors of the community.
would be great for the ommmunity in fort mmurray.
I want to have a cool place to play with tubes ball pits and mazes.
MacDonald Island has become the meeting place for the City of Fort McMurray, the additional space will be a welcome to to all parties using the facility
Might as well go big now while it cots X amount rather than do half and revisit again later when it cots much more to build
I'm interested to know if a rowing club is part of the expansion possibilities? An indoor rowing tank would be awesome for the winter months.
Looking forward to the expansion and future development that includes the baseball stadium. Anything less would be unfortunate. Look to the future, build the ballpark.
Concept B is strongest, because it keeps in mind the long-term sustainability for our region, as well as it aligns with our Municipal Development Plan.
Baseball is the fastest growing sport in Fort McMurray right now and should be included
We as a comunity deserve a nice Baseball feild for our teams to play on
The gym is too small and crowded. The set up for the stretching area and is very poor.  There should be a separate studio like SSWC.  A restaurant for events like curling would be great as well.
change MacDonald Island Park Ballpark entrance
can hardly wait for a bigger better shinier gym
Concept B, gives softball 2 fields but also allows for a professional baseball team and hosting provincial and national tournaments but also gives our youth a chance to be proud of a baseball facility with possible role models and influences in possibly professional ballplayers. Also, gives families a chance for summer entertainment. Badminton centre would be a waste, 2 indoor existing areas already have badminton set up and we need to focus on our youth not an adult sport.
BIGGER BETTER FITNESS ENTER
Excellent presentation
An iconic arena
Community definatley needs this growth! Very exciting - looking forward to linking the downtown city centre
I do see where shared office spaces for non-profits are in Concept A, but I see no evidence of a child care centre, that I understood was part of the expansion plan.  Because of that I am listing "neither" as my choice. Inclusion of a child care centre in either concept would have me voting for that option.
I would like to see a baseball/softball field as I would not have to travel to Timberlea/Thickwood so much for practice/games
please ensure to include base ball in your expansion plans.
As you consider expanding MacIsland, please take into consideration the need for an inter-faith prayer room.  Our local hospital has a great example - it's a beautiful room in the basement, welcoming for all.  As a practicing Muslim, I and many of my fellow community members often have to run out to our cars to pray - when we are at a community event.  It would be great to have a place to pray. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Many community members have asked me about this as well, so I thought this is a good time to convey this powerful request coming from a large section of our community.
I love this, except the wood in the design. Very expensive and high maintenance, as I own a wood house. Why not any incorporation of aboriginal architecture on the island
Works well with the MDP, CCARP and CLLVP
I believe than concept b will prepare for the population growth
We would like to see fort mcmurray baseball frow to provide opportunities for high school and grad players
capacity of fitness centere - there is no plan to meet the fitness centre demands in plan a
A is preferred with some golf course expansion, we don't need to spend money on a massive ball facility to massage someone's ego, spend it on multiple fields so many people can use the footprint.
We need to make sure we have all local sports included with the expansion as well for individual needs. So I feel concept B covers both of our great towns needs.
As was shown this past weekend, one of the things that is needed most at MacDonald Island is more parking.  With any expansion to what's already there, will again come the need for more parking.  How is that problem going to be resolved?  Would there be any possibility of including a multilevel parking area at mac island?
We have always built our city too small, lets not make the same mistake this time!  If we believe in the growth of the MDP this might even be too small.  We are a world class city, lets act like one and build world class community facilities!  GO CONCEPT B or BIGGER!
Great vision lets build it...but we need one on the other side of the bridge.  Get MI  to do that one so it gets done!
Please keep outdoor tennis corts or build new one. We have 300 players at least. There is a big benefit for people outside building
Fitness expansion is a must for new delevopment. Increased membership sales to an already corded fitness area.
I think the marina would be a great asset to MacDonald Island.  Fort McMurray needs access to it's water front and this marina would be a great launching pad for any of this cities current or future non-motorized sports clubs.
I believe that giving all sports clubs a venue that could be utilized is very important. There are many more venues needed through out Fort McMurray for the Spring summer outdoor sports. With Concept B both baseball and softball would gain an additonal venues to better schedule their sporting events for the season.
Finally, HOW DOES THIS SUPPORT THE KIDS LIVING IN TIBERLEA IN CONTROLLED HOUSING? They deserve quick access to recreation and MacIsland does not provide this. Fix transportation or put facilities where these kids live.
Need lots more parking,
If you are anticipating large growth and want these facilities for years to come, why would the baseball stadium be so small? Winnipeg Goldeyes stadium is a great example of one in river valley next to downtown, and leads the American league in attendance. Spending more now is much more affordable than the entire cost to add another 5 thousand seats in 10 years.
we need to have a hub of the community which will  help lead to develop the City center. Great Plan
I would like to see, if possible, 2 or 4 indoor batting cages added.  Still doubtful on the success of the professional baseball team
First, we should not be offering public money for expansion of golf courses and large sports venues so I cannot support A or B. Private money or fees should be used golf and anything supporting professional sports. Conference facilities should be a privately funded. I can support: Outdoor Field & Events Venue, Community Pavilion, Shared Space, Skywalk, Interpretive Trail System, Badminton Centre, and Turf Field House (Multi-Sport), Field House Expansion, Fitness Expansion if they a) provide for those least able to pay, and b) don't compete or displace private companies business.
Ensure the design incorporate large family (4-6 children) needs for stroller, change rooms and walkways,  Gather the needs of parents by asking parents for their input.  Previous MacDonald Island designs lacked the accessibilty and needs of families and have made the great facility unenjoyable for families. Given that Fort McMurray has a large family population, many activities requires that the participate to bring siblings with them.
Baseball is the 3rd largest youth sports organization in Fort McMurray after hockey and soccer.  A Baseball stadium is an opportunity for summer college, professional and senior baseball teams as well as hosting Fort McMurray Midget AAA Bantam AAA teams competing in provincial leagues & regional tournaments. Also, Father Mercredi Baseball Academy would make great use of a stadium.
Please include a hot yoga studio-this is desparately needed here in this community.  Please!
HAVING A PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL TEAM IS A WONDERFUL IDEA, HOWEVER, REALISTICALLY, WE NEED FACILITIES FOR OUR GENERAL COMMUNITUY MEMBERS FIRST AND FOREMOST.  FOUR VS ONE WINS IN MY VOTE
scrap until you include baseball
Wow! Magnificent concept, something our community deserves!
There does not appear to be enough parking to accomodate all of the added facilities and resulting events that would tak place
the additional space will be a welcome to to all parties using the facility
Build on other side of the bridge - North for future facilities project
I am with FMMB and I represent the trappers baseball academy, just build B. Building A is pintless without the Baseball stadium as baseball is also multipurpose
I think not buliding would be crazy we need more things to do in the summer and having a pro team here would be great from everybody in the commuinty, and all the other things are great to and sense the bowling alley is closed why not build a bowling alley to. thanks for all the great work cant wait to see pro ball in fort mcmurray
More than that is the parking issue itself, while more is added in terms of recreational locations, has anything been done to address current facility issues such as parking?
If we're going to do it, do it right the first time instead of having to expand in a few years.
Snay should flow constantly to Athabaska river. Add big culverts build bridge. We need olso build bridge over clearwater river behand golf club with shiber systen to control clear water river level aroun DT area.
We need a baseball stadium for professional baseball.  Would be great to see more seats (including some covered seating, outdoor suite seats, group/bbq areas ) and scale back the "staging" area to accommodate that.  Please prioritize the baseball stadium and build first!
You should add a dog park in the NW corner of the concept picture.....along with a walking/biking trail surrounding the entire permiter
