Shell Place construction on schedule with placement of first piece of steel
Community members joined Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Mayor Melissa Blake and Council and representatives from Shell Albian Sands and provincial government as the first piece of steel was placed at Shell Place on Friday morning.
“The portion of Shell Place construction that began with groundbreaking last fall was primarily focused on the very necessary yet underground elements of the project,” said Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer at MacDonald Island Park. “With the first piece of steel being installed today at the new Field House, the community can expect Shell Place to really take shape in the months ahead. We’re excited to continue this community-led project.”
In addition to Mayor Blake, speakers included the Honourable Don Scott, MLA for Fort McMurray-Conklin and Associate Minister of Accountability, Transparency and Transformation; Sheldon Germain, RMWB Councillor and member of the MacDonald Island Park Board of Directors; Nick Sanders, Chair of the MacDonald Island Park Board of Directors; and Simone Marler, Communications Manager with Shell Albian Sands.
As important as this construction milestone is our commitment to an accountable and engaging approach to community building on which the foundation of the ‘Think Big’ Shell Place dream was built,” said Sanders. “Along with representatives from our partners Clark Builders and Turner Construction and Architecture: ATB and 360 Architecture, we also held our second scheduled media update prior to the placement of the first piece of steel. It’s essential we keep the community informed.”
Shell Place construction will continue throughout the spring and summer months, with piling wrapping up as well as the ongoing installation of structural steel beginning with the new Field House.
The Shell Place project is on schedule and on budget as we adhere to the Guaranteed Maximum Price negotiated prior to approval from RMWB Council last July,” said Reid. “Now it’s time to deliver on our promise as construction ramps up this spring and summer.”
Shell Place renderings, a three-dimensional fly-through video, and a live project image update can be viewed at macdonaldisland.ca.
More announcements regarding Shell Place will be made in the months ahead. The next scheduled Shell Place media update as announced last September 15 at groundbreaking is on July 26.
